Not sure how many people have read my tales of woe re: my 1998 P38 in the past (new air suspension, new torque converter + pressure plate, new catalysts - they collapsed and blocked the exhaust, new air con: matrix & control panel, new engine: porous block etc etc).

It decided to catch fire the other morning - apparently a faulty alternator, which melted lots of underbonnet wiring (including LPG conversion) and ignited the soundproofing. The fire brigade were quick and stopped it going any further (not sure whether this is good or bad!?).

Waiting for insurance inspection tomorrow.

Anyone else had similar problem?

Shentodj.

Unlucky, you probably would of been better off waiting the extra 5 minutes before calling the fire brigade just to make sure you had got rid of it, puts me off now as I was thinking of buying one to replace my disco, good luck any way mate.

Never heard of an alternator causing a fire, unless it had a major short inside.
They have been known to catch fire due to a water leak(!)under the plenum but these are few and far between.

Anyway Insureres will not rebuild burn outs anymore, they are too costly and remain too troublesome. Say goodbye to this one!!

A P38 with an LPG conversion having an underbonnet fire? Whatever next? scratchchin But I doubt if the two are connected......

because the diesel version usually gives a hint of reliability?
