Nikon D40X or Canon 400D?
Discussion
All,
I'm thinking of buying either of these, although I've also considered the Olympus 400E but that seems a likely to be obsolete soon. However although I've read quite a few of the recent DSLR threads I'm unable to work out which of these camera's would be best for long term ownership in terms of lens compatibility - your help please!
The main thing I'm unsure of is motor in body vs in lens.
muchos gracias,

I have recently brought a 400D and I'm very happy with it.
From what I understand, with the Nikon you get a better kit lens, so might be easier to get better results straight away, however the 400D is thought to be the better body out of the 2. So overall I would say the 400D is the better investment becasue your likley to get new len's at some point anyway.

The current £50 cashback on the EOS 400D may swing it for you:

The D40 and 400D are a different class of camera as far as I'm concerned, I'd go with the Canon every time, it kicks the crap out of the D40.

The D40x is a beefed up camera. more megapixels etc, and a lot closer to the 400d than the d40.
BUT it still doesnt have that body motor leaving you stuffed for cheap zooms & good primes.
Thanks all.
I have to buy from Jessops as I have insurance vouchers after a break-in so vfm isn't that relevant in terms of outright price, although it would be nice to get a fast wide/short-tele lens.
Does the Canon have a motor & the Nikon doesn't? In terms of handling feel I preferred the slightly smaller size of the Canon to the Nikon.
cheers,

Nikons old lenses(and quite a few current ones) dont have focusing motors, they rely on one in the body because all nikon (AF)bodies have had motors.
Canon put AF motors in all their EF/EF-S lenses, non USM ones are poor but equivelant to the body motor.
You can use any nikon lens with the d40 but focus manualy. It also affects 3rd party lenses such as sigmas and tamrons.
I think the cheapest long zoom is about 350quid that has its own AF motor.
Go for the 400d, better all round camera than the d40.

do you think this would this apply for the £50 canon discount ?
