Guys,

I am flying from Ireland Saturday to inspect and buy a 745 from a BMW dealer, this will be for Ms Gulliver and her cubs.

Being a BMW approved car I am not too worried about crash or service history, but I want to check that all the gadgets and nubbins work, and I am not very knowledgeable on the 745.

From the BMW PHer wisdom, what should I check and look for, what are the weak spots ?

Since I bring back the car to Ireland afterwards, it will be harder to have small pb fixed, so I would like to check toroughly.

Thanks for your advise as to what to check and look for on a E65 !

Hi, what age is it and mileage? I have run a few of these up to stellar miles, the main problems have been gearbox gremlins, they will run to about 100k before they start going awry though, see if you can find out what has been done to it from the previous owner rather than just looking at service history.

That should be fine, nice low miles so should last a while. Is it loaded with bits?
Are you close to Duffy BMW? they have quite a good reputation.
Best of luck.

Beware of clocking! 21.000 miles on a 745 sounds very low - check the history and see if it is limousine service car, or privately owned. I would insist on seeing original invoices and the service book, and call the servicing dealer to verify.

Very few Chauffeur companies use petrol 7's, everyone that I know has 730d, but rear seat condition will prove how busy its been!

It is a BMW dealership, so I don't think they would touch or even try to sell a clocked car.

It is fully loaded with gadgets, my question is more technical, in asking what functions or parts are notorious to be weak and should be looked at during inspection specifically on a E65....

Hi Gulliver - they won't know or care if it's been clocked. As long as they have no official knowledge of it, they won't give a stuff. They do virtually no checking...the best that happens is they ask the previous owner if, to the best of his/her knowledge, it's correct and has had no speedo changes during it's life. Some of them use VMC (a company run by a former trading standards officer) to verify the mileage...and all they do is write to the previous keeper/s and ask some questions about what the mileage was and whether the speedo was ever changed. No one can be compelled to answer any of these questionaires and I would imagine the take up is fairly low. I don't know what else they do to verify it, but suspect it's not exhaustive and only glaring cases are picked up. Let's face it...it's a nightmare for the dealer if, having done the deal, they find they have a car with a dodgy past! They won't want to know. The only way you can be sure of a cars history and mileage is to buy it new!

At 21000 miles I would guess it should show very few signs of wear...certainly nothing on the gear lever, pedals or steering wheel. Very light wear to the outer edges of the seats but not much on the seat facings. Good luck!

Cheers,
J.

Funny you say that, a friend of mine is looking for a 735i at the moment. He viewed one car and said that the steering wheel and drivers seat were highly polished and looked a different than the rest of the interior.

LOL... just before Christmas viewed an X5, minutes away from signing on the dotted line I noticed some over spray on wheel arch. After five minutes closer inspection we found filler under the back light clusters and other areas of overspray. Conclusion, the car had been in an accident with both minor front and back end damage. Salesman claimed it was clean, but rough filler hanging down didn't lie. He said he'd check with the bodyshop and get back to me later....he never called back.

I don't think anyone's saying that...just go in with your eyes open and don't be too reassured just because it's a franchised dealer.

I would think many 7'ers are bought bu co director types who maybe go to work and back and not much else.

21K in 3 years isn't very suspicious really.
