Decat woes

I fitted a pair of decat pipes to my 4.5 at the weekend, and indeed the sound is bit more crisp with a few more pops n’ bangs, but one of the cats or decats is slightly longer, so the exhaust is now pushed over a bit, resulting in an occasional exhaust vibration.

Wish I hadn’t bothered now, as I don’t really want to grind and re-weld the bridge plate every time I need the cats back on. Was thinking about some kind of adjustable bracket instead of getting it welded each time. Nothing ever goes to plan with TVR’s…

Are you sure you have the right pipes? There's a difference in length between the ones for a 4.2 and the ones for a 4.5. From memory it's either 0.5" or 1". Sounds like you've got one of each?

I've been a bit of an arse as i had them made at JP, but i could have got them £40 less from TVRcarparts.com and whats more i never checked they were the same length. I was in a bit of rush on saturday, so i don't know whether the exhausts were fettled so the cats could fit at the factory, or indeed one of the decats is too long.

I think the difference in length between 4.5 and 4.2 cats (or de-cat pipes) is more like 1.5". If you had one of each I don't think you'd ever have managed to fit them in ths first place.

Exhaust knocking on the chassis is a bit of a common trait and generally requires re-visiting the job and a bit of tweakery if you've recently been unbolting and bolting things down there. If everything's miles out then the other remedy involves re-jigging the engine mounts but since your exhaust was presumably not knocking with the cats in then you ought to be able to resolve matters now without going that far.

(Just fitted a full JP system including de-cats so have my old set spare)

i am about to fit sports cats or go decatt so might want yours ..what price are they and what kind are they

Not sure who made them - they were on the car when I bought it.

They're stainless, adjustable and are in great nick. Let me know if you want a picture, would be looking for about 40 quid.
