I recall seeing historic Can-Am races at a number of events in the past (I'm taking the late 80s and early 90s here).
Apart from exhibition runs at things like the Goodwood Festival of Speed, is there any chance of seeing these fantastic things actually racing again?

Hmm scratchchin - there might be some there...

Race 11 (Saturday): The Denny Hulme Silverstone Endurance Trophy for the Hagerty World Sportscar Masters.
Lola T70s, Ford GT40s and Chevron B16s are among the glorious sports prototypes of the 1960s and early '70s in this race, but open Cosworth DFV-powered March and Lola chassis, and nimble two-litre cars will have an edge.

The Big Block CanAm cars arnt competing in the Silverstone classic this year, we were running last year at the event though. The Masters series which is racing at Silverstone this year caters for some of the earlier CanAm cars such as the McLaren M1's and Lola T70 Spiders.

The only round in the UK in 2007 for the Big Block CanAm cars will be at Brands Hatch 29th June to 1st July 2007. If you would like a close look at one of these cars drop me a PM nearer the event and i'll be happy to show you round the car in the pits.

This is the Big Block car i race prepare and engineer at the races, leading at Brands Hatch last year with Frank Bradley at the wheel. It's a March 717 8.8 litre.

Has that car been at a track day at Silverstone recently? If so the noise was out of this world!

Yes, we gave it a few laps following it's winter rebuild at the BRDC trackday on Wednesday.

They (i.e. the team or whoever acme up with the idea for that front end) should not have been allowed to run it - completly wrong and not period as per the long original with the spoiler.

That is what I would race 707, 717, M8 or M20 if I had the funs. CAN-AM IS AND WAS THE BEST EVER. Not alway sthe best racing (from reading all the books on it) but by far the craziest cars - Oh and the Lola 260 that Jackie Stewart did a season in and gavethe M8's a real close run in (with the huge front spoiler).

You clearly dont know what you are talking about.

The car is the March 717-1 built by March in 1970 as March 707-1 for Helmut Kelleners with the same long nose as the other two March 707's built for Chris Amon and a test/spare car. At the end of the 1970 season this car, 707-1 was returned to the March factory and had an aero package upgrade, moving the water radiator from the front to the two rear sidepods, that allowed them to use a more conventional short nose configuration and the car recieved a new chassis number as 717-1. It was raced by Helmut Kelleners in 1971 in it's 717 short nose spec as a March factory run car.

When the car was restored in 1996, it was race prepared in it's original 707 specification because there were concerns that the 717 spec would have some cooling issues. This turned out to be unfounded, so in mid 2005 we converted the car to it's 717 specification and tested it, the cooling worked perfectly well, so we have retained it in that spec.

Edited to be more civil. laugh

Knew it would be something on how it was run over here (Europe InterStuff vs how it was run in Can-Am).

Just looks like a Radical to me - show me some period pics with THAT front then. Might have had rear rad - but I doubt the front was that modern looking (i.e. Radical) - is that the (Exact - from the March 71 Molds then) 71 front then?

How about this?:

Kelleners, Zolder, 1971.

See what you are saying but the current car has a steeper angle of attack than the one in the pic.

That is my point - not saying they did not run SOMETHING like this - but does not look like from same mold, 71 pic sticks further forward and not as steep (modding along modern lines but keeping the same general look).

Anyway - I like Can-am not after an arguement!

I am more than happy to be told I am wrong but even in the good old days cars such as this were the subject of constant ‘fiddling’ and modification. Perhaps not to the extent that we see today in F1 but no the less the bodywork a car started the season with would often be modified as the year went on. As such could it not just be the case that the current spec. of the car could be that used at such and such a track which would be different to that used at another? Take the low front wing for example on the period photo.

I know nothing of the history of this particular car but there is the question with some cars where the original designs/moulds are just no longer available or their current location unknown. As such the restoration of a car, which may have arrived sans various bits of bodywork, could lead to best guesses being made from the dimensions of those parts which are available, recollection of those who worked on them and pictures/film of the car in its salad days. As such the true rake could have been, say, 23.5 degrees but that which has been newly fabricated ends up being 25.5.

I do know of many other classic that are essentially like granddad’s faithful old broom with 6 new heads and 2 new handles.
