realistic power & suspension
Discussion
first ever posting on PH, motivated by the various articles in this months sprint, lots of BHP quotes for RV8's, usually in the 250-285 range for the 500 engine - some as high as 300-320 for fairly (& expensively) modified versions. I'm a proud owner of a 1996 griff 500 and its been rolling road tested twice, once at 302 with a slight airflow meter problem, 307 once cured. my question is - am i just lucky with my griff - only mod is K&N Filter & ACT induction kit, or are all the other figures quoted at the wheels. The 307BHP figure was achieved on the RR by Richard at Dulford Automotive who I gather are highly regarded locally and who I would strongly recommend to anyone with a TVR!!
Oh can anyone suggest a good sensibly priced dampers and springs as i feel mine are going, but before i leap in with my cheque book i'd like the accumulated wisdom of the PH fraternity..

You've possibly got a warmer cam/inlet manifold/trumpets/throtle in there i would suspect(any one or combination).Have you owned the car from new,and know the engine has not been touched? Many cars will have had new cams by now,and that brings with it the option of changing any or all of the above, and these mods are undetectable from the outside.Dulfords RR gives similar figures to the one i use(track car solutions),and a std car would make something in the region of the 270's on that, you wouldn't gain 30bhp just from an ACT kit, which itself makes little difference on its own.As for the suspension, what DNB said,Protechs or even Nitrons if your budget allows. It would also be worth doing the bushes and ARB droplinks as well,as these also make a significant difference.
After talking to many many people and humming and haa-ing ... my choice of dampers boiled down to a choice between Protechs and Gaz Golds.
I have now met Derek from Gaz (yesterday) when he did the full Geo on the car (it has transformed it) and backed up by Ian at Torque's high recommendation, for £550 + Vat for Golds and springs, I think that they are what will be going on in a couple of months.
It was nice to note that even though he sells the things, at no time did Derek try and push the new dampers. He simply said that the Geo would transform the car and give it a go with the current Bilsteins and see what I think.
(As the actress said to the bishop - I think I need stiffer!)

Hi Burriana
I have been speaking to Derek as well and as you say no prsure and just seems happy to talk
Am awaiting his and Ian at Torque RVT's email / call with prices and then will be putting it in for the gaz gold's and other bits
Protechs were tempting tho ..............

This is it, I've now put 670 Gaz kits on TVR cars and whilst most people are happy with them I do feel the need to offer alteratives, this is why I now offer Nitron as well as Ohlins and I will be carrying out spring testing on the new Racing Reds
in the comming months and if they come up to scratch that will be 5 ranges of shocks.

Nic to see your finally offering some more choice Derek

Hopefully they will be viable, business wise,we already know just how good they are, performance wise

.Oh yeah Protech are viable business wise but I don't see a need for taking on another twin tube shock at the moment, I'm looking for a reasonable priced monotube to bridge the gap between Gaz and NTR's.
Mind you if people ask Ian for Protech's, we don't mind setting them up.

If you are not bothered about about adjustables(which to be honest I'm not) why not look at the Bilsteins from TVR Power I think.
I thought exactly that ... but then I know that I need quite a stiff set up for the fast b-road twisty driving that I do. If the Bilsteins are not stiff enough, I can't exactly send them back once fitted, so that is where the adjustables come in.
