Hi,

Can't help with the power steering prob, but I can shed some light on the handling:

The MkI had an unfortunate handling trait from the beginning, especially at high speed, because the rear end is a mess -

1) The standard rear springs/dampers are too soft;
2) There's no rear anti-roll bar;
3) The geometry means that when a rear wheel loads up, it takes on toe-out (links are too short).

What this does is to make the car very nervous, exacerbated by the short wheelbase and the central location of much of its' weight.

KW make a replacement spring/damper set that improves matters significantly. This is more progressive and is available from K-Tec:

The standard car had a nasty habit of snap (terminal!) oversteer during hard cornering, especially if it's thrown into a bend.

The nervousness isn't helped as the car also seems to suffer from front-end lift at 70+ mph. Whilst the KW set-up won't affect the car's aero, it does help to stabilise the weight transfer.

When Renault did the MkII, one of the major revisions was to the rear, because of the problems this handling trait caused.
