Whats the crime?
Discussion
Ok, so not directly car related, but wondering what the situation is on not turning up to Crown Court? I have an aquaintance (SP?) that didnt turn up at court for a serious offence (not driving related cos he doesnt drive) and wondering what the outcome would be.... Oh, and he has been arrested on this and another charge....
So, whats he looking at?
Cheers,
Paul

Mmm, yes he was arrested (couldnt have happened to a nicer chap
). However, they subsequently released him within the 24hr thingy. Just wondering what impact this will have on him - he has some other charges too, but the failure to attend crown court thing is pretty damn serious....
He's such a shit-wit.... still just wondering really.

we obviously share some friends! To be honest it depends on what else he's being done for....courts will prosecute the serious things first and then on. Not attending CROWN, must mean he's up to his eyes in something pretty serious....so the non turning up likely wont matter a jot! (judge may take it into account when sentencing of course...)
Failure to comply with a court summons is "contempt of court", a serious offence with a max sentence of 2 years imprisonment and/or hefty fine, even if he's not guilty of the original offence.

It is an offence of failing to surrender to Court Bail.
Magistrates Courts are limited to the sentencing powers for this offence if it is their court the bail has been set for.
Crown court bail is something completely different with regard to the punnishment available to the man in the wig and gown. They do not like this. Usually order a bench warrant for the person that has breached the bail and unless there is a very good reason for not appearing, then usually another 6 to 12 months can be considered looking at a steel door and not bending over to pick up the soap!

Thanks guys - just wanted to know what he was looking at - which by the sounds of things, quite a lot and certainly a stay at Her Majesty's pleasure. Still, as I mentioned before, couldnt happen to a nicer person...
There is a long story behind this, but cant relay at the moment (pending investigations etc) but I must say that its really funny and come a year or two will make a cracking pub joke...
Nightmare - sounds like it is someone different but equally dim.
Finally, I cant help thinking that I should become a criminal sometimes... I mean, no offence to the Police, but most crims are somewhat lacking in brain cells and usually get caught cos they did something really stupid... Cant help thinking that with some decent brain-power you could get away with stuff.... Not serious of course, but why oh why are criminals so stupid????
