GT3s Beware 195mph Cayman about
Discussion
Hi
The point is the next evo of the 911 will have a mid engine it will have to if its to compete with the new Audi. Why do you think Porsche have never fitted the same power units to the Boxsters and Caymans as the 911,They know no one is going to pay 40% more for a car that is slower and handles worse. When was the last time you saw a rear engine car winning any major race .You can not stick a big lump of metal at the back of a car and exspect to handle.
Believe me the mid engine 911 is on its way!

Err, I think that might be because the rear engine format was so successful, it virtually killed off any alternative, so it was regulated out of existence.
If you want to make a car that will win races, you put the biggest engine, with the biggest turbo, at the back of the car, with minimal mass at the front. You get a driver that can cope with it, and you blitz everyone.

As Porsche have done with the new ALMS Spyder, Trouble is they did not take your advice and put the engine in the middle.OOPS!!
Last time I looked, everybody is struggling to beat a diesel!
What the diesel that runs in an entirely different class with almost no restrictions foisted upon it ?

Seeing as the current 911 is still better than an R8 why would Porsche need to move the 911s engine?
And 911s won their classes in a multitude of major sportscar races last year and will continue to do so, as they have for the last 40 odd years
If one only looks at the way things are now, one can never see the future. If one looks at the past with a view to the future, one has the ability to leap beyond!
Edited to add;
With hindsight that's figurative, and metaphoric. I always wondered if that's the reason why the late 911's looked like frogs with the bit between their teeth!

And one can see that Porsche are the most successful sportscar manufacturer of all time, in terms of their success on the track, particularly relating to cars derived from production vehicles. On top of that they are now the most profitable car company in the world and are still producing magnificent cars
Yes your right a mid engine diesel Audi.
Please do not get me wrong I like all Porsche,s but they will have to change if they want to see of not only the new Audi but some of the Jap motors that are in the pipeline.
I was at Brands the other week end to watch the Porsche Cup cars, and to see them suddenly snap from understeer to power oversteer was a sight to behold. They had as much balance as Buttons new Honda. Talk about a handfull,Hats of to Tim Harvey as he the right idea how to muscle one around the track.
Anyway must go got to watch the F1 Quali,Believe their all mid engined..

yes amid engined diesel Audi thats in adifferent class to the LM Spyder.
Oh and who are now the major shareholders in VAG?
And Ferdinand Piech is linked to which motoring dynasty
And F1 cars are not mid engined
valid points.
but i too expect the next generation of 911 to have the motor in the middle too.
the competition is getting to close to the 911 , so perhaps all the engineering / r & d skills it now has at its disposal will help maintain it at the top of the tree.
i expect to see some lambo / r8 d and a in the next one.
perhaps even a bit of platform sharing ? as per golf , tt, a3, skoda octavia, seat leon ?
not the best thought in the world but profits the name of the game.
time will tell

Untill the road bends .And dont forget they hav'nt bolted on the turbos yet.
If Porsche ever let them do it, It would blitz a 911 on the tracks.

Even a standard 997 GT3 shouldn't be troubled, from everything I've read - similar top speed, 4.2 secs to 60 and awesome handling....

Maybe but I doubt it.
the 928 was going to replace the 911 30 years ago....
The 997 was going to be a V8 (from the Cayenne) according to the majority....
the 911 is asuccess for anumber of reasons but its history and direct link to its ancestors is a part of that, going mid engined would need adesignation change, it simply wouldnt be a 911.
Though agreed the bean counters may well be the ones making the decisions
