6 days to go and clutch gone!
Discussion
Popped out to my local chippy lastnight - went to get back in the car and couldnt select any gears. i could select a gear whilst the engine was off but not with her on. AA guy came out and checked the clutch fluid under the bonnet (not sure if this is master or slave cylinder, this was fine. Anyway he reckons its the teeth on the clutch. I now have 6 days to get a new clutch fitted (if this is what the problem is). I do have a warranty on the car which covers the following on the clutch: Centre plate, pressure plate, thrust bearing and clutch fork.
The clutch was last changed at 22,000 miles and the car is currently at 49,000 - according to the service history it was replaced with the mark 2 cerbera cluch, flywheel amd slave cylinder in 2000. Car also had a new master cylinder in 2003. What are my chances of getting this done through the warranty??
Going to loose the cost of the ferry and the hotel if the car isnt ready.. gutted to say the least.

The Cerb does not have a fork, well it has the slave cylinder which acts as a fork.
First we need to establish what went wrong. Did the clutch feel any different leading up to its failure? If it felt sodt and spongy then that suggests the slave or master, check under the car for fluid, slave, or in the footwell under the clutch pedal for fluid, master. If the clutch was fine, and there were not problems then I would suggest thats its the fingers gone, does the pedal feel ok now, normal I mean? If yes then its the fingers.
The biggest problem with clutches is the labor in removing them. I can do one in 6 hours but you really need a ramp. Rebuild kits for the clutch are available from Clever Trev. for about £280 but if I were you I would get a new clutch, new slave too for prace of mind.
If its the fingers then that is the pressure plate, and will be covered. While you are there get them to change the bearing, covered but about £15 so not a lot, slave and seals it just makes sense.
This is what I think could have hapened to yours,
If you need any help with the warranty let me know, I work within warranties, but for aircraft.

The clutch felt fine up to it going. The pedal feels as normal - just cant get it into gear whilst the engine is on. Looking back using the search facility its looking like the fingers. The pressure plate is covered in the warranty but wouldnt the warranty company still say its down to wear and tear seeing as the car last had a clutch back in 2000? Thanks for the advice.

I would agrue that the fingers are not the wearing part of the clutch. The friction material is the part that is meant to wear out, not a failure of the fingers. You could also tell them that this is part of a material failure.
Dont worry about this until they say they wont pay.
If I were you I would get it booked in somewhere today and order a clutch and slave from CT.
I sent the car to Torque RVT in MIddlewich on the back of the AA truck lastnight. Ill speak to him later about sourcing a new clutch - who is CT? Just tried speaking to the warranty company - closed until Tuesdday and the policy states not to get the work done until i speak to them - that leaves me 2 days to get it sorted before the trip to the Nurburgring.
Really sorry to hear this Steve, what a nightmare timing wise! But I reckon you can still do it
So, not wishing to interfere, but for the sake of time - CT - www.clevertrevor.net. Based in North London. He could perhaps get one out and on it's way to Middlewich today....etc. etc. Could be there Tues am - when you're ringing the warranty folk......
I am sure you can still make Cerburgring! Good luck

Whats the difference between rebuild kits and a (new)Clutch? From looking on the Clever Trevor website at the pics and the blurb that goes with it,the only difference i can see is that the kits come with out the slave. But everything else looks the same. Just catching up with this, sorry to hear about it, shitty timing (mind you better here now than next Saturday morning or something). Am sure it can be sorted, worth getting the parts in place and ready if poss, ultimately the clutch is going to have to be extracted to see what has happened anyway so at least this part can legitimately be underway and therefore ready for a fresh fit once you have spoken to the warranty peeps on Tuesday.
Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Hi Steve
It sounds exactly the same as what happened to me 5 or 6 weeks ago, your clutch fingers will have given up the ghost unfortunately. Speak to Keith Burgess at Clever Trevor who is quite possibly the most helpful guy in the world. You'll need to find out what clutch is in the car for definite, mine still had its orignal clutch which are now no longer available as a direct replacement, rather than upgrade to the later version (which yours sounds like its quite possibly had) i opted for a rebuild kit. They rebuilt my cutch for me and then one of his staff delivered it personally to the garage refitting everything for me .. absolutely outstanding service. If you have an original clutch then 2 days is pushing it in terms of timing as they will need your original clutch to carry out the rebuild. On the other hand a later clutch is readily available.
As i say you need to establish which clutch is in the car, I believe (well according to Keith) this can only be done by removing the clutch and taking some measurements.
Hope this helps

I've got a clutch and the seal kits. I was going to stick the clutch on ebay. It is used but Power told me it's fine - the fingers are fine and it's only done 12K.
I had trouble with the flywheel so just changed the clutch while we were at it.
I am 40 mins from Ian's at Middlewich.
I'd sell the clutch and seals for £250.
Just email me via my profile
