Original speakers vs new speakers.....with pictures.....
Discussion
Just fitted some new speakers, and as I know a lot of people have asked about the quality of the original ones vs aftermarket ones, I thought I'd post some pictures of them so you can see the obvious difference in quality.
My replacements are from JL Audio. Completely awesome....but not without some fitting problems. These problems mainly stem from the fact that although everything says that our original speakers are 6.5 inch, they are actually only 6.25 inch (on my 05 VXR anyway). This meant that any aftermarket 6.5 inch speakers won't fit without modification.
Pictures show the original paper speakers, quality aftermarket speakers and then two images of the speaker mounting before and after modification....
Now fit like a dream, and sound even better.
Original Speaker - made of paper....
New Speakers - much better.....
Speaker mounting before....
The hole wasn't big enough since the original speaker is only 6.25 inches, and also the shild type thing behind it was in the way for the bigger magnet of the quality speakers. It had to go....
Speaker mount after.....
Speakers in the rear are currently just disconnected as I have the same problem i.e. different size, but in the back the speakers mount directly to metal car body so isn't so easy to modify.... Still got to figure that one out - and if anyone has any ideas I'd be happy to hear them.
Having said that, from the front seats I don't notice and the new speakers are completely fantastic. Rear subs are still working, but I haven't really worked out if they add anything to the overall sound or now. More fiddling here to come as well.
FYI - my head unit is the Alpine IVA-W200Ri double-din DVD player.
Cheers
Steve

Hi Steve,
Looks like your speakers had pretty big magnets on them also. One word of caution the plastic is designed to deflect any water from the window away from the speakers. You may want to consider using a little dynamat to do the same job at the top of the speakers.
I know my car allows water through the door (my other cars where always dry but the Monaro is not like that). Just incase, yes, I have moved the rubber a little + lubed it and still does the same.
Re: Removal, yes, the speakers are very easy to remove but you need to be picky on your speakers or do a mod job. I was lucky my Infinitys fitted with minor mods (just finding somewhere to put the crossovers), just my 6.75" in the rears where more of a problem.
Cheers
