Right, always used Mobil 1 like a good feller all through the ownership of my 4L but am considering using something else. For instance both GM's own fully synthetic 5w-40w and (don't laugh) Skoda's Synta fully synthetic 5w-40w both match or exceed the spec for Mobil 1 but cost around £16 for 5 litres.
Before anyone derides the Skoda stuff, I would hasten to point out that it maufactured for Volkswagen Audi Group and is sold in all their garages and fitted to their performance models. Strangely it's cheaper at Skoda dealers than VAG/Seat dealers.
Anyone got an opinion?
think the general consensus is that Mobil 1 is a bit too thin for an old V8, but that's about it, no one has had a "bad" experience with Mobil 1 apart from excessive consumption...
for what it's worth, I use Motorsport 15/50 Mobil 1.
My dealer puts Shell Helix in my Chimp 450 - says Mobil 1 is for newer highly tunesd cars and not really suitable for a V8 designed over 50 years ago.
So far so good!
You'll get nearly as many answers as cars on the road
I use Millers 10/40 fully synth (I too think that the 0/40 is too thin (it was only recommended by TVR when Mobil sponsored TVR too IIRC))
As I suspect, everyone uses everything. I am of the opinion that it's a waste of money paying the 'premium' for Mobil 1.
I asked the same question about my 350, which has a 4 litre sepentine engine. Much conflicting advice-decided to go for 15/40 semi-synth castrol magnatec (about 15 quid for 5 litres in Halfords at moment)and change every 3000 miles rather than go fully synth in the end.
As a new 5.0 Chimaera owner I spoke to Millers technical dept as I run their Coompetition Full Synthetic 5W40 in a 1.8 Zetec race engine and it seems like good stuff. They suggested CFS 10W60 as it stays thicker as the temp goes up and that's what i've run since with no probems. About £25 for 5 litres so not a bad price either.
I also use Millers 10/60 after speaking to their technical dept,(very helpful and well informed)being using it nearly 2yrs with much improved oil consumption compared to Mobil 1 no downsides at all, even the price is reasonable.
Thanks everyone, will go for Millers then this time.

Is Millers readily available, ie can I get it in halfords, and is it best for a 4L P reg Chim?
Dont think you can get Millers at Halfords. Best bet is to look on their website, millersoils.co.uk, I think and look for your nearist stockist. Mine comes from a local nut and bolt shop!
