Off to town today to meet some peeps and went to overtake someone and the engine just let go! Lots of smoke, all the oil and coolant departed from the engine (4.2) and if you look under the car there is something which may be the gearbox or bottom of the engine hanging down a bt with a dirt great crack in it!

Off to the TVR centre tomorrow I hope but I have a horrible feeling that it is going to be the wrong side of expensive!

I'll post more when I know more but had to post cos I am deeply not happy right now. Oh well, at least I guess I will have a very sorted cerbie in a few weeks time!

Oh no Adam, sorry to hear that. Sounds like another snapped crankshaft and sounds like this one has taken the block with it. Second hand engine is going to be the only option here I think, speak to SlvrCrb about the in's and out's of this, he is (unfortunately for him) an expert now on broken cranks.

How much is one talking about for this - ball park obviously?!

No idea what the engine number is, but I'll have a look

Second hand engines have come down in price over recent months. But it is a lottery ie could be buying a smoker. You are looking at prob £1K to take out a fit the engine plus buying the engine - I would say £2.5K min for a engine? They have been sold for £6K upwards in the past.

I think Mike (Itsallyellow) may have a spare 4.2 as it was on offer to SlvrCrb recently after his latest failure, not sure if he took him up on it though so might still be up for grabs. Think Gary has it about right on the price - just be aware that if you end up buying another pre crankshaft upgrade engine then it could just happen again next week - take some advice on it from TVR Centre and maybe get a second opinion and some more advice from someone like Andy at APM. You could go the extra and get a 4.5 or a create a snorting 4.7 if you can find the right bits , always nice to get something on top of what you had before when spending bigish money, that way it can seem half upgrade and half fix.

Good luck, hope you get it sorted without too much pain.

And also - how do I put up the pics that Bumblebee took when he came and rescued me from the roadside?!

Thinking of which, big thanks to him. he does not get over to this forum, being as he is not the proud owner of a Cerbie but despite his lack of cerbieness, he is a jolly fine chap!

Thanks for the number.

Chatted to a few people tonight and I think it should be possible to bring the whole job in for under 5k. Hardly ideal but hey, could be worse I guess!

Just re-size your pictures to 500 wide (so they'll fit on the screen and will open quickly), got to www.tinypic.com and upload them onto there.

It will then give you a link you just copy, and paste it into your post to get the pictures on to here.

(You use the middle one of the three option they give you after you upload it).

Simple as that.

something not right with those pics .. why is your engine hanging down so far under the chassis rails? that pipe out of the bottom of the sump should be levelish with the bottom chassis rail, and there seems to be a mismatch of angle between engine and bellhousing .. are you sure the engine hasn't parted from the bellhousing and that's what caused the engine to fall down, possibly clouting the sump onto a raised manhole, or the mismatch of input shaft and flywheel then caused the engine to seize? it all looks very very starnge in the pics ...

Agreed, those pictures look very unusual indeed. The sump is very badly cracked for sure, but the way the block is hanging low and to one side is weird. I'd have a closer look at the bell housing to block area, as it does look like the two may have separated, allowing the rear of the block to drop and smack the road causing the sump to crack. If this is the case, then the engine internals should be fine, but it will still need some major surgery to fix.

TBH, I have no idea what the damage is but I did think it was weird that it dropped. With the oil and water loss I am pretty sure it is toast but it is at the TVR centre now so all will become clear soon I hope.

Not my best ever weekend!

I don't know if its just the way it looks on my PC, but there seems to be 2 distinct colours each side of the crack, as though it has been Sikaflexe'd (glued) together in the past - I know thats impossible but it does look a bit like that.

Looking at the photos at a larger size it's much clearer than squinting at the little camera screen yesterday.

As others have said, the engine isn't sitting where it's supposed to be - that failure's been caused by the sump hitting the road.
