Sports Exhaust on Everyday car - Too noisy?
Discussion
Currently considering a few different cars including a Chimera.
2 weeks ago drove a 4l and sounded good. Then drove a 4.5l Cerbera with sports exhaust - and had a much bigger grin! - The popping and rumble especially on the over-run was fantastic! - However, decided the Chimera was a more sensible choice for me, and a convertible.
Presumably i would be able to achieve a similar noise and popping by fitting a sports exhaust to a Chim?
I will use the car as an everyday car travelling for 1.5 hrs twice a week and only 15mins commute 8 times a week then weekend travelling could be anywhere up to 200 miles.
My question is: although the noise is clearly fantastic (and one of the biggest attractions to me buying a V8 TVR) would this noise get a bit too much after some time when you would like to actually speak to your passenger or listen to the radio?
I just felt that although the standard exhaust sounds good on the outside of the car, as standard it did not have as much of the rumble and popping I was initially expecting to hear inside the car.
Appreciate any opinions.

If you like the noise, andit leaves a grin on your face, will it get tiring? NO!
We had a chim first and modified the backbox so it was straight through, whre-a it was noisy it wasn't tiring, infact BORING we wanted louder, but we ended buying a cerb and within weeks that was decatted and had a sport exhaust. All the trips we did we did not get annoyed with the noise/flames at all.
I think the way foward is to whip the exhaust off, open up te backbox, take out the waddng and replace with two straight through pipes, noisier gurgle and some pops and bangs, but easy to live with.

I have a 450 with sports exhaust. If you can drive on decent roads where you will be modulating the throttle a lot, then it sounds great and isn't wearing at all.
But motorway trips where you sit with near constant revs for long periods is utterly tiresome and wearing. I have a pair of tail pipe inserts which are secured with a short bolt that I tend to use for this sort of trip. Quick and easy to install and remove, and just knocks the noise down enough to make it more pleasant.

I had the sports exhaust on my 400 and although great fun for the pops, bangs and flames it did tend to give me a bit of a headache after a long run. My current 500 is standard and one of the first things I promised to do was have the modification.
After a 4 hour each way trip last week I began to have my doubts. A run out over the weekend with a mate on board confirmed it for me though when he admitted that much as he loves Tivs he used to avoid travelling in the 400 with me for the same reason.
Oh, and both were/are my everyday car.

Before the Chim I had a Cobra with sidepipes.
Sounded great but the noise was too much on anything but a short run. Many people would have rightly thought that I was a noisy b*st*rd.
My Chim has a standard exhaust which also sounds wonderful, but in a more refined way, not too noisy on long motorway trips and possible to drive through built up areas without people looking at you as though you are someone who has graduated from a Corsa with drainpipes fitted.
When I want to hear the noise a bit more I lower the back section of the roof.
At the end of the day my Chim has more power than almost anything on the road and I don't need the car to be deafening to prove it

For me I'd like the SEAC soundtrack without too much volume. Decat and Cherry Bomb conversion gets close, but just too loud for respectability - in fact with just the decat it's probably louder than most people would like, and that's stopping me from getting the Cherries fitted. For me it's more about the tonal properties then the volume - the SEAC or large motor launch burble is what I'm after, but without irritating the entire street when I get the car out.
Yes, I should probably get a SEAC, but the wedge styling (and forehead chopping windscreen) doesn't do it for me.

My Chim has a factory fit so called sports exhaust (in relaity larger diameter last few feet of exhaust). It is deninitly louder than standard and is great when on a good country road. It can become wearing on the m/way and can act as a speed limiter if you want to hold conversation with the passenger. Anything above 80-85 and you have to raise your voice considerably. I also worry when it comes to track days. Never failed a noise test yet but only actually been checked once. It all come down to what you prefer at the end of the day.
Had the sports exhaust conversion (sleeved pipes and wadding out the rear box) about 3 years ago and the car is used daily (mostly by Mrs FFG) and no issues with the noise as its behind you. It is only a fraction louder than before but pops nicely.
Maybe its a Griff/Chim issue though.

Got straight through pipes on my 500 and never really bothered me. Did a 400 mile round trip this weekend with the missis and all she said was can you crank up the volume on the radio ever so slightly when we were on the m/way. She then asked me to turn it down when we got down to lower speeds as she "loves the noise!". Each to their own i guess...

Thanks for all the responses.
Sounds like taking out the wadding and replacing with 2 straight through pipes may be a good balance.
I'm not bothered about having the noisiest car on the road, but if i can get it popping and banging a bit that would be great! (flames sound good too! (well, look good :-) ))
I have about 5 main options on my weekly drive to and from Banbury ranging from nearly all motorway to no motorway, and only normally about 15 mins difference in time so should be able to vary a bit if noise a bit much on long motorway journeys.
Don't have to visit clients very often (and probably take a work car if i need to) so shouldn't be an issue. Work won't mind the noise - All 3 directors and petrol heads! (and hoping I get a TVR as they always wanted one too and want to go for a drive!!)
Earliest I leave generally is about 7.30am on a monday, otherwise is 8.30ish and may get back late on some Fri/Sat nights but usually 6-7pm during the week so hopefully neighbours will be understanding!
Any idea of cost to take out wadding and replace with straight through pipes?
If I get a Chim without a sports exhaust already fitted, I will get along to a meet and compare noises before deciding!
