Drove a 1972 911 2.4S on Friday. Bl00dy marvellous. Not as quick as my last 911 (a 964 Turbo II!), but still very very good. It also gave me a much nicer feeling than the 997 Carrera S I test drove last month - which great though it was I have to say it was a little 'empty'. As Porsches are second cars/ weekend fun for me I think I know where my next Porsche is coming from. The 1970's...

I am a 996 man through and through

However, I absolutely love the 1970's 911. if mine was only a weekend runner I would have one like a shot

I've always hankered after an early 70's 911...good to hear they can still provide the thrills.

Not too ready to snap in to oversteer then?

Trouble is dealers are asking a lot for a pre-73 2.4 S.

For 50K there is an awful lot of choice about. Can't help feeling a 930 is better value.

I suppose you're paying for the lack-of impact bumpers? (among other things)

it's the pre-impact that look so good to me.

Fittster - you're right, they do seem to be a lot of money, but on the other hand I don't really see any depreciation. Swings and roundabouts I guess.

If I wanted a competent everyday 911, I'd want something modern like a 996.

As a toy I woudn't though.

I do like classic 911s but their price appears to have rocketed over the last couple of years.

Not that I've ever dealt with them but the main dealer for Porsches of this era appears to be Export 56.

There prices range from 29.5K for a 911T to 60K for a 911S Targa.

I think if I was going to spend that sort of money on a classic toy for the weekends I'd be looking else where (Maserati Bora).
