Insurance question

My son is 17 soon and I have promised to buy him a car, I have been thinking along the lines of clios, puntos etc but then a thought came into my head-A covin. If lets say its a 1.6 beetle engined one, would he be able to get insurance on it as his first car? If he could would it be astronomical? Any other interesting kit car ideas? I really want to suprise him!

Easiest for you is to just ring some of the Kitcar specific insurance brokers as advetised in Kitcar magazines. Your cheapest is going to be if he built the car himself. The insurance companies have learnt that having spent the last 18 months building the thing you are less inclined to throw it into the nearest ditch.

There's no reason why they wouldnt insure him, I'm assuming that a price would need to be settled on. Worth ringing round the usual suspects; Adrian Flux, Footman James etc to get ideas of prices, or do a web quote with one of them and see what comes back.

*edit, forgot to do my bit for the owners club...How about a Quantum?

Since we are in Ireland I cant shop around with all the Kit car insurance companys, I know of only 1 kit car insurer. I though since it was a kit car it would be cheaper to insure-Am I right?
I like quantums, that will be added to the list. He actually doesnt know what I will be getting him so I hope to really suprise him.

I do hope the insurance situation has changed in Ireland since the early eighties (I left in 1985). The cost of insurance was astronomical then. If you were under 25 it was either third party cover only, be named driver or be from a wealthy family.

When asking about the "driving with owners permission" section on the policy to see if I was covered on my dad's car the reply was that as I was under 25 at the time the insurance company needed to know. In other words I had to be a named driver, with a subsequent increase in premium. We refused as the increase was more than double the premium. I was then named on the policy as an excluded driver.
