Need EVO and Scooby advice

I use my Evo 7 as a daily driver and dont find it too expensive. They require a specialist service every 4500 miles but if you go to a specialist the 4.5k can be done for about £150 and a 9k for £250. I only do about 10,000 miles a year so works out a service every 6 months which is what I have done on all my cars anyway so isnt much more.
Petrol consumption is not good though especially when driven enthusiasticly(spelling!, and like to eat tyres. And they can get expensive if things go wrong.

Even the later ones are only about 55 litres, which can go quick. Tank range for me is about 180-240 miles depending on driving. If you hoon, expect it to drop to more like 130-140 miles.
I believe the tank is smaller on the 7 - only 45 litres.
Bargain for the level of performance IMO.

Hi, thanks for the advice. Must admit I'm a bit of an Evo virgin, always wanted one, but only ever got as far as an Integra Type R and now a Civic Type R. I want something more grown up! Looking to get either an Evo VIII FQ-320 or I've seen a nice IX GT Import locally. I won't be driving it that much, so not too worried about the servicing etc and I know I'll end up hooning it everytime i drive it. Think I need to book me a test drive!
I had the same problem when looking at a new car evo or scooby. I test drove both and in the end came down on the scooby side (although it was very very close). The reasons I didn't go for the Evo IX were:
1) Short servicing intervals, I drive to work which mean service costs would be twice the scooby
2) Not much fun to drive in traffic felt a bit raw for normal driving
3) New Evo IXs were more £ than a new STi
4) It doesn't have a flat four boxer engine
Reasons I got the Scooby:
1) Bullet proof running gear and a lovely 2.5l boxer engine
2) Like the styling (horses for courses I suppose)
3) Practical as an only car.
4) Easy to drive as an everyday car
5) Similar performance to the Evo (you're not going to notice a lot of difference in the real world on the road)
6) Quite a bit cheaper plus I got £3k worth of free fuel from the nice man at Chris Neil
Overall it was a very very close call between the two. The evo probably just about has the edge on performance, although the difference is so minor (for a hamfisted driver like me) that it wasn't worth the extra £. Drive them back to back and see what you reckon.
I'm saving up for the mods I'm going to do as soon as the warranty runs out. Hopefully I can see it pushing out 350bhp + out of it.

Have to drive everythng before deciding! I to looked at an impreza, the only thing that stopped me from getting a nice clean RA import was the £2.5k insurance quote!! Hence i went for the skyline GTS-T. Maybe someday i will own either the evo or scooby as like them both and there ideal 'practicle' cars ie the four doors........

Cheers for the feedback. I've also considered a Skyline before, but the Evo just about has the edge for me. But saying that I'm so tempted by the new Scooby RB320. Saw one at the Ace Cafe, Furball Meet in London last Monday. Looked really impressive, the owner had spent an extra £7k on extras. Only draw back, it was really really quiet when he drove off. I was hoping for and expecting a lot more noise. He mentioned he owned an STI before and the depreciation from new was crippling. I think I really need to test drive both and compare, then I'll use my womanly charm to do a deal!!

Chris Neil has one in stock for £31495 (ish). Depends whether you think the suspension tweaks and 18inch alloys are going to make that much difference to you personally over an STi PPP.
nutnut, depreciation on new scoobys and evos are both pretty crippling in the first 12 months. Then again if you want a new car you have to take the hit. Lets face it you never buy a car to make money.

Thanks StevieB and MilnerR. As I'm still a scooby and Evo virgin I think I'll leave the RB320 alone for the time being, even though I would like one. Need to book some test drives in both cars and go from there. I want at least 300bhp, prefer the styling of the Subaru, but also like the agressiveness of the Evo. I'm so torn between the two. Hopefully test drives will help make my mind up. Thanks, Sam

Before that I had a Skyline with a couple of mods(check my profile).
I test drove a few EVO's but at the end of the day the Scooby felt a better car for me. I had been hoping to spend a lot more money on a car but with a wedding coming up and the fact that the future Mrs GMan needs a new car this seemed like a good choice.
It can take a load more power too, which I will be doing in May.
You mentioned noise before if you decat it I think you will be happy.

The addition of a prodrive exhaust system has made mine sound a bit more authentic. As soon as the 3 year warranty runs out then things are going to get a lot louder and a lot faster 
Well I think your all swaying me towards a Subaru. Which to be honest, is probably the better and safer bet for me. I live in Wiltshire, there is a small Scooby garage nearby and I've seen a pretty good garage in Aylesbury, but apart from that I need to do my research. Willing to drive to Scotland if it means getting the right car. There were some nice examples on Autotrader website last night, which I need to take another look at. If you have any garage recommendations or see any decent cars for sale on your travels, please let me know. Thanks again.

Yes, the late model Spec-C cars do have equal length headers which don't have the same burble, still a nice sound though and still sounds different to a straight-4. Most jap-spec cars still have the burble though its just the top one which are different.

worth checking out, could give you a good opportunity to drive both and see which you prefer.Clutches are the traditional Subaru weak point, mainly because (a)they get driven hard and (b)with AWD traction rough driving doesn't just get let off in wheelspin, it transfers through to clutch or gearbox if real bad. clutch slip is a bad sign, but a bit of judder is fairly common (at least it is with old ones, not too sure about the newer cars, if clutches are even an issue at all with them).
