Does any know if number plate size is checked as part of a bike MoT? I have a slightly smaller than standard number plate (not silly!) and have an MoT due on Friday. I can change back to the original but it would be easier if I didn’t have to.

Thanks

Yes they are checked. As long as its not to silly and can still be read from a distance you should be ok.It does depend to a certain extent on the tester and how strict they want to be though.

Thanks for the promt reply. The current plate is only slightly smaller than standard (9 x 7 rather than 11 x 8) so I might risk it.

I took my friends bike for an mot it sounds like it was the same size as yours.I phoned the test center before i went just to get a feeler on if he would fail it and he said as long as he could read it from a distance he would pass it.hopefully yours will be ok to.Good luck with the mot hope it passes.

Mates an MOT Tester, he carrys document under his seat refing to the plate lettering and sizing....

don't quote me on this but say's something along the lines of... "Plates need to be legilable from 20 metres (I think) evenly spaced and sized".....

so smaller plates are mot passable, as long as it's readable from the set distance, and doesn't have chav italics!!

Many thanks gents. It looks like there will be no issue as the plate is very readable (no silly fonts). I only got a smaller one as I wanted one with the country symbol on it for the European trips (saves issues with the Gendarmes) and I thought I’d get one that actually matched the width of the rear mudguard to save it overhanging and getting covered in chain grease.

I have a small-ish metal plate on the trail bike, and the a-hole-tester made me not only buy a plate from him, but also fix it to the bike properly; despite telling him that (a) it was going on the trailer (that he could see!), and (b) it was coming off the moment it got home!
Needless to say I don't go back there anymore for an MOT!
