EVO as tow car?

Looking at getting a tow car for racing next season and would like something that would be fun when we do extended hoons around Scotland. We need the space for luggage when hooning and for tools when racing. The FTO would be ok but getting a towball isn't worth it and, frankly, I want some 4WD action!
I know the EVO petrol tanks are pretty small, but are there any other things to put me off? And can you get extra tanks? I'd guess the WRC bods would have some soultion to this, but they don't need the luggage room!
Also, what mk would people suggest? I like the 4s but looking in the other thread it seems the 5s are a more rugged, which is something I would really need.

If you are not too worried about running costs an Evo 5 onwards would fit the bill.
Extra fuel capacity would be possible but you would loose space and I'd imagine not many insurers would be keen to offer cover even at silly prices.

Looks like an Evo is out then.
We're going to look at an untouched scooby wagon turbo thingy soon from the PH classifieds, any pointers on what to look out for? - ETA Just had a look int the EVO/Scooby advice thread, so we'll check the clutch is ok... any more for any more?

As well as an Impreza wagon, also worth considering a Forester turbo or Legacy wagon (either a 2.0 turbo or 3.0 n/a version would do fine) as a bit bigger, more solid tow wagon (though the Forester is based on impreza chassis so not much bigger).
ETA: Or as an outside option, how about an Audi RS2 avant? more grunt than the other cars mentioned here, much nicer interior, good solid tow car. Maybe not as chuckable and entertaining to drive as Evo/Impreza but probably the one you'd prefer to be sitting in for hours on end towing a trailer up a boring motorway on the way to a race meeting. Seem to be similar price based on a quick look at PH classifieds.

I did have a quick look at the Audi selection earlier, but expect the RS2 to be a tiny car (I don't know my German cars at all), so didn't look - only at the 4 and 6 variants which seemed a tad pricey... I shal go and look now...

The RS2 is the original Audi mentalist-wagon, the RS4 was its successor, then the RS6 was made as the big daddy next size up Uber-Wagon.
RS2 is 2.2 5-cyl turbo, 315bhp standard with potential for much more given where that motor comes from. big laggy though apparently, but that shouldn't be too hard to address.

Bought an untouched UK Subaru Wagon Turbo from the PH classifieds.
The towing capacity is more than enough, very nice seats, nice ride, plenty of go and it didn't keep shouting "more right foot now Now NOW!" to me (as pretty much every other car I have ever owned has) so I can see driving lots of miles with the trailer on being ok.
It stuck to the road well when pushed and the overtaking power wasn't too bad either. Looking forward to picking it up next weekend and seeing what it can do on the cross country trip home.

I think it may give the liz a run for its money - I've just been looking into these things stats
I expected the 5 doors to be fatter and slower... they are of course, but not by the margin I had expected. We'll have to compare the cornering capacity on a track day

Oh, and the insurance is good too - not quite so cheap as the very modified FTO (but that has a tracker, so really costs 100 quid a year more than I pay to the broker) but only £655 fully comp, 5 years NCD for the two of us with all the bells, whistles and my points! Very reasonable - I suppose getting older does have it's good points.

I expected the 5 doors to be fatter and slower... they are of course, but not by the margin I had expected. Some tests of the early five doors were 0-60 in low fives - pretty rapid! A friend of mine has a wagon and his '97 standard car with about 90K on the clock dyno'd at 230 horses.
