Little switch..

If it's a switch with a Rotary control (but without the knob)then it is the switch/thermostat for setting the Air-Con temperature when you have it re-gassed.
Partly correct ..... it is for adjusting the temperature alright but the temperature doesn't necessarily need to be adjusted after a re-gas.
The thermostat should hold it's setting regardless of the amount of gas.
That may not be the little switch, however, as the stat is located under the steering column.
Picture time, methinks .....
I'll put a picture up over the weekend... This little switch is definately under the drivers well carpet. Looks like a little flick switch and it isn't fixed to anything.. I vaguely remember it is on a red/white stripped electrical cable.
Looks to me a bit like an old fashioned kill switch.. Grease Lightning style... lol..

This is the way I put pictures in.
It works a treat as the picture appears in the message.
Just re-size your pictures to 500 wide (so they'll fit on the screen and will open quickly), got to www.tinypic.com and upload them onto there.
It will then give you a link you just copy, and paste it into your post to get the pictures on to here.
(You use the middle one of the three option they give you after you upload it).
Simple as that.
That Pic isn't the Air Con thermostat, I haven't a clue what that one is. The Thermostat isn't under the steering Column, (Well it wasn't on the 2 Cerbs that I've had) its on the right of the Drivers footwell just in front of the leading edge of the door, about level with the bottom of the dash behind the carpet.

I won't be brave and actually try flicking the switch yet... seen as the car does work, however, it is due to go in for some minor bits of work in a couple of weeks. I'll ask the garage if they have any ideas.
Many thanks for all your help though.

Who's done the servicing work previously? I'd expect a call to them would reveal something. Also, if you also know who the previous owner was then they might know too.
Hi Graham !
In my Cerb SP6, i have no switch like that, so i think it is something that has been put in there by a previous owner.
Do you still have the problems wih the engine cutting out, www.pistonheads.co.uk/gassing/topic.asp?t=377594&f=6&h=0 .
I think that switch could have something to do with it. As i can see on the picture the switch is of a kind that isn´t water proof. To place it underneath the drivers carpet isn´t a good idea then since it might be some moist there coming from wet shoes etc.
What happens if it is a kill switch and the carpet moves a little while you are driving the car, it might trigger the switch for a tenth of a second and cut out the engine. The same could happen if you have some corrosion inside the switch.
Try the car with the switch moved to another place, and see what happens with the engine cut outs.
Hope you solve the small niggels you have in your car so you can enjoy it as it should be.
