My 749 came with a 190 section on from the previous owner and I've stuck with that. I thought I'd go for a change this time though and have gone back to a 180 as it should be, a 2ct to be precise.

I've only done about 100miles so far but the early signs are good! Nice sharp turn in - looking forward to the next trackday in may now

So if any of you are running wider tyres than you're supposed to - give a smaller one a go, you might be very suprised...

Swapped my GSXR to 180 when I fitted the latest Corsa's and I'm very pleased with the result

idea
I fit the 180s from my track bike onto my R1 which should have a 190, feels more or less the same. No noticable problems with stability when cornering or stright line.

or indeed 3rd and 4th gear wheelies cop

My 916 was originally fitted with a 190, I changed to a 180 - huge difference in turn-in etc vastly improved but it has a 5.5" rear wheel and a 190 tyre sits wrong on that, by all accounts a 190 turns as well as a 180 if fitted on a 6" rim. The new 1098 has a 190/55 on a 6" which supposedly works even better than a 190/50 due to taller profile.

The 190 was a 'fashion' thing rather than a performance thing which the 748/916/996/998/749/999 didn't really need....

For your info

I may look to fit a 190/55 to the R1 when they are due for replacement.

I think I read somewhere that 190`s never really get to the edge of the tyre during `normal` riding ..due to the angle of the tyre at the edge which is steeper..unless you are Mick Doohan...I think it was an article in a bike mag on a ZX9..which on the 190 ..had a larger unused strip no matter how hard they tried to get there..I`m sure rearsets fitted on a track tool could manage it though...Another thing is sometimes the 190 can get VERY close to the swingarm & linkages on some bikes..and if your rear wheel allignment isn`t spot on..may rub...

I ran Bridgestone BT014s in 190/50 and then Super Corsa's in 190/55.

Looking at the graph I'm pleased to see that the profile is similar for the 190/55 and 180/55 the profile of the 190/50 looks much fatter.

180/55.

Could possibly be to do with the size of the rim! as someone somewhere recently said.

Most of the bike tyres that I look at usally have the whole of the rear tyre to the edge, it's the front one that's hard to get right to the edge.

5.5 inch rim should have a 180 on anyway

im happy with 190 on my blade and have no problem getting to the edges, although the front never gets used right to the edge

Here is the Pirelli Corsas at 28 miles old with chicken strips...

100 miles old...

At about 400 miles old, half way through a Donnington trackday...

..and at the end of the day! 600 miles old and knackered!!!

The life of a rear tyre on a GSXR thou! I have always used 190/50 on my (std) 6" suzook rim. Would I be better off with a 180, or would it wear even faster?

They're not knackered in the slightest! 50 miles on the road and you'd never know you'd tracked it. There's oodles of tread left before you near your indicators as far as I can see.

I do hope you haven't binned them!

PS - try turning left sometimes.

Slightly awkward turning left at Donnington! Hehehehe... The really awkward part was that the 45 degree angle bit was down to 2mm with the centre of the tyre still at 4-5mm! It made the handling..... interesting shall we say! Cured the tyre with some wheelies, although that was last summer, I have supercorsas on now.

But a 190/55 has a better profile than the 190/50 and will turn-in better (just make sure it clears any hugger etc).

Here's the next ex track tyre from my 600, destined for the R1
