I have the HK upgrade on my current car and on a previous one with no such problems!
Gotta be a fault somewhere.

Do you have a phone kit plumbed in?

does the hiss go with the sound of the engine when you rev it?

sounds like a bad earth somewhere....

nope the hissing doesnt change when the engine revs, its sounds like a half tuned in radio station but very quiet.

The exact same thing can happen when a Sony Sound-0n-top amp is fitted. Its quite a popular and easy fix to the poor performance of the standard E46 head unit, the by-product of it being that quite a few people complain of a low sounding hiss from the speakers. If you bought the car used its possible the previous owner might have one this, if not then this is of no help to you!

I used to have a 330 with the HK and that hissed as well, from what I remember its quite a common fault, the quality on the HK really is awful

I'm not sure I agree with that!
The HK has a poor reputation because when the car is new it sounds terrible. I was so regretting paying for it when I got my 3 series but after a couple of months with the speaker properly run in the sound was transformed (this isn't mumbo by the way - accepted practice in home hifi). I've had a few good systems and would definitely spec the HK again.

I had my 330ci for over a year and the sound didn't improve, agree its an improvement over standard but its not good value and certainly not up to standard

Strange!
Everyone commented on the very marked improvement in mine so I assumed all were the same? Actually after sitting in an Audi S4 on saturday and listening to the awesome Bose hi-fi upgrade I think I'll change my vote

If you have sound on top, and it is incorrectly set up you will get hiss at low volumes.

The fix for this is to turn the volume on the controls down - overall volume is the same, but you will lose the hiss
