I know this has been covered in the past but could I ask any 996tt owners that have switched to the Porsche short shift kit to let me know what they think?
Particularly interested in those that have had it for 12mths or more.
Is there an issue when cold? Does this get better over time? Thanks

Can't comment on a short shift on the TT but I did have a B&M short shift on my Box S for 12 months or more.

The shift is lovely and short. Much better than the long long standard throw but it was notchy and was worse when cold. It gets better when warm but does not get any better with time.

I am considering getting one fitted to my TT but after hearing the negative replies on here am now possibly reconsidering.

It is just so annoying that Porsche have only just realised (with the 997) that the gear stick does not need to move a metre to select the next gear.

Sat in a Cayman S with the optional short shift installed last week and it was lovely

had it fitted to mine since october and think its fantastic. Its the porsche s/shifft kit. Slightly "knotchy" 2nd to 3rd when cold but nothing drastic, old one was slightly notchy in the same way. Heard/read some of the posts on here/pcgb about it but definately worth the cash imho and i only use the car for road use so not a track thing either.

What sort of money did you pay all in? And did you have it done at your OPC?

The Porsche SS is actually a rebadged B & M item, trouble is if you decide to save yourself some money and fit the B & M item you invalidate the warranty.........

The SS at www.carnewal-europe.com/main.htm says warranty is retained and it seems logical if its astraight swap out, think I would go this route.

How difficult is the install? or do you need to get it fitted by an indy?

I have had the B&M one fitted to my 996TT for about a year now and am very happy with it - seems really smooth and well made - I wouldn't go back to the original!

Short shifts are not to everyone's tastes.

I have one on my RS and it is sometimes too quick for the 915 box. And, for those used to the light change of modern road Porsches, s/s can feel tight and less intuitive. However, on some models, such as the GT3, it feels just right and completely in character with the car's purpose.

Best to try before you decide.

As Geneve says, try first - I have it and I am not a fan.

maybe notchy wasn't best descriptor, just slightly harder to get a clean quick shift from 2nd to 3rd, eg letting it "centre" first before selecting 3rd. Been the same on my other 2 996's as well so maybe its me after my subaru days Maksing email me through profile for more details, cheers.

Just do it, once you do there's no going back. changing gears was like rowing a boat before i changed to
the short shifter.

The first month or so it felt a bit knotchy but now it feels just right. I've had mine on for over 2 years now.

I know exactly what you mean about the centering bit from 2nd into 3rd i have missed 3rd gear a few times in cars with short shift fitted

Only happens 2-3 times and i get used to the change.
