I thought about a 4rotor quite a while ago. I got hooked as soon as I heard the sound of the Mazda Le Mans car. That's the sort of sound you need for an Ultima...Sounds more like an F1 car.

Has anyone put any of the various race v8s v10 & 12s in an Ultima (specialist engine shops). V8's do have a nice brute sound (nothing like a v12 though, however I reckon a car like the Ultima needs a cleaner, revvier mechanical sound. Hell, make it sound like a fully pumped Jag 8L v12 and I'd be happy.

Rotaries are cheap to build, and are reliable IF built right. They are also light (a 21b, 3rotor, is lighter than an LS1 or 1UZFE (lexus v8, my prefence out of the v8s, with mods, revs to 7k and can handle not far off 1000hp stock, toyota def build the strongest engines).

The rotary would also have a lower centre of gravity.

Torque would obviously be higher up with rev range. The car is light, so the lack of low end torque would be acceptable. I'd put 2 13b single turbos together. Not hard to do, they're reasonably cheap, and my home country is THE capital of rotary modification. The fastest street cars here (in sydney, capital of rotaries) are getting 8s and 9s for genuine street cars. These are mainly of 13b's (2rotor) as well.

As to the arguement about chevy V8's being THE cheap power, I disagree. Japanese engines are much cheaper to mod (specifically the turbo's). Look at the 2JZ-GTE (supraTT engine). VERY cheap to mod, and has knocked on 1000hp many times with just boltons. The 1UZFE (Lexus V8) can accomplish similar feats when turbocharged.

Maybe it's just that things are more expensive in the states (import engine wise). Here, import engines are the way to go. Not many people mod Honda's here. It's mainly the rotaries (RX7, RX5, etc, with a handful being genuine 8 sec street cars), WRX's (we have quite a few WRXs in the 10s a by now a few would've dipped into 9s, they are also a very common car, and many are very well modded), Skylines (we tend to mod the non GTRs here more, but have quite a few GTRs in the 10s), we don't get into Lancers too much. We have plenty of 300zxs, most not too seriously modded. Supra's aren't a big thing here. Hardly any 3000GTs.

As for american cars, good luck. Vettes are rarer than ferrari's here, and there's only a handful of vipers. A viper costs $150 US off the floor in Aus, and second hand C5s will cost 50kUS+.

As for the locals, holden and ford. They're no match. Too heavy, and they're very big cars.

Anyway, back to engines...how about a cayenne V8TT? 450hp stock. Should push 600-700 with a dose of boost, +1000s with some decent mods, and the sound, it's gotta be good.

Supra engine definately shoudlnt take the place over an aluminum LS1. Its heavier and doesnt have the power. Even the turbo supras cant run around a track as fast as the other V8 cars, look at the Trans Am race results, Supra's down at the bottom(Im not sure if they were even racing this year).

The WRX can run 10s but their engine is a problem around a track. It doesnt have the torque to push it through corners like larger displacement engines.

Rotaries are fantastic though, it would be fascinating to see what one could do with the Ultima.

I disagree with your thoughts on rotaries.

Sure, they make plenty of horse power but no REAL low down torque.

They really need to be kept spinning to get the best out of them.

And the sound ....Well thats personal taste I suppose

Anyway, I just dont think that an Ultima is the right place for a rotary!!

This subject keeps on coming up, and it always goes in the same way.

The Ultima was designed for a big V8 in the back. You can put other engines in, but the character of the car is such that it screams PUT A V8 IN ME!

Can you imagine how your car would feel if it turned up to a meeting with a bunch of hairy arsed V8 Ultimas, and while they were lifting their engine covers and showing off all their nice chromed rocker covers and 8 shiny spark plugs, it would cower in the corner, embarrassed about its puny power plant.

You wouldn't do that to your beloved car would you? No? Thought not.

I never said they made low down torque. I said that is what they lack.

As to the sound, I agree in general. The 2rotor-3rotor turbos you hear on the road sound like they're laying farts, but the Le Mans 4rotor mazda used really sounds amazing. It sound like am F1 engine- no joke.

Never talked about putting in a supra engine. I said a 1UZFE, which is a lexus v8. As to your comment as a trakc car, I disagree. The only disadvantage it has is weight. It is an amazing machine in every other way. A supra finished 2nd outright in Targa Tasmania (behind a 996TT). The premier road race of Australia, beat all types of other cars.

Rexs (WRXs) do lack low down torque. All I was saying that there alot of quick Rexs in Australia.

As to the rotaries, I agree. A quad rotor would be amazing (although wouldn't be as drivable as a v8).

James, I agree. A v8 is the best option. Not that heavy, has the advantage of discplacement, and can be boosted if you want.

My choice would be a lexus/toyota v8 (the 1UZFE). These engines love to rev (unique sound), and are EXTREMELY well built. NA, they can't compete with a chevy v8. Boosted I'd think the lexus v8 might have an advantage at the same power output. As far as reliability, I'd def favour the lexus v8.

It's also different (I'm def going the v8 twin turbo route, only because we can't chuck in a v12).

No? Well how about an AUDI W12 (yes thats a "W", its not a typo)

The W12 is 513 mm long (20.2 in), 690 mm wide (27.2 in) and weighs 245 kg fully dressed (539 lb). 309 kw (420 bhp) and 550 Nm torque. Oh and its dry sumped from the factory

But why bother?

Both are ALOT more expensive than a sbc, have less torque and less power. Basically a sbc has the most "Bang for Your Bucks". Period.

And, although Im simply speculating, I bet thats the main reason why Ultimas are designed to take one.

Lets face facts.

You may get a Lexus V8 with close to 500 or 600 hp (and dont try and feed me a bunch a BS and tell me that your going to get 700+ hp out of a lexus V8 AND expect it to last more than a week), but by the time you spend THAT much money on a Lexus V8, you've got a sbc that will rev to 8000 rpm + and develop well over 700 hp.

How do I know this? Simple my mechanic/engine builder (actually he's an SAE accredited automotive engineer)just went through the EXACT exercise for two of his buddies. One went for the Lexus V8, one for the sbc. Guess whos still smiling and whos not.

Dont get me wrong. Im open to all suggestions, but when talking about big, reliable hp you have to start with plenty of cubic inchs.End of Story. You simply cant rewrite the laws of physics because you dont like a sbc!

Why bother? The SOUND....still, you're right, it isn't the best option for the ultima.

As to the lexus v8, you misread me . I said a TWIN TURBO lexus v8. The lexus will rev higher than the sbc. You CAN get lexus NA v8s putting out alot of power, but these are race engines.

Like I said though, I'm arguing a twin turbo lexus v8 against an NA SBC.

As far as I'm concerned, the lexus V8TT is a better option. It's cheaper, more reliable, it's a more modern engine (no flames please, but it is quad cam, 32v), it's also lighter than an all alloy SBC. It's stock internals are much stronger.

There's a guy in Australia that got 520 HP to the wheels stock, no problems. Didn't even open the block. The car is a 9 sec runner, and this was half a year ago. They said they thought it possible to get close to 1000hp stock. I'm not sure it'd get that far, but it shows you the engines potential.

I'm not saying it is THE better option, full stop. I'm saying it is IMO. It also costs less than 2K AU for a complete engine (about 1.3K US). Sling on a couple of turbos, sized for torque, and get an easy 500hp.

I think you'd need a large capacity SBC to be able to compete with it. Of course, you could always twin turbo the chevy too, giving it the advantage.

Sorry but I dont see how a quadcam can be lighter then the LS6 motor. Quadcams are generally wider, taller and heavier, wich makes it alot tougher to get it into the car. What displacement are you talking about and how heavy is the engine?

I know you were talking about a TWIN TURBO Lexus V8.
So was I!!

Anyway, I think we are all getting ahead of ourselves.

Can somebody that actually OWNS a GTR comment on problems they have getting all those ponies to the ground?

I mean, 700+ hp is all well and good on a dyno when the car is strapped to the ground so it doesn't jump off the dyno, and those knurled rollers are pretty, but I havent seen any knurled roads lately... know what I mean?

What Im worried about is the fact that you simply cant get all that power to the ground!!

OK, you can get traction control and Launch Control (preprogramed amount of wheel spin to get the quickest take off without "bogging down" the engine - not likely with ample hp anyway!), but what do these devices actually do. They CUT the power to prevent wheelspin.

So how much horsepower can you really get down to the track on takeoff before you break traction? 100? 200? 300? You see where Im coming from? Too much horsepower is not always a good thing (I CANT believe I just said that!!!).

But wait, theres more...

Once your up and away... extra neddies work just fine, again, if in reason!!

By the time your into say third or four gear, the chances of breaking traction a diminished, unless youve got too much hp (well torque actually!) So plenty of power will help over come wind/rolling resistance and ensure good continued acceleration.

So, how much is enough?

Lets face it, it youve got around 500 hp and can go from 0- 100 mph in 7 or 8 odd seconds, thats pretty damn extreme

Most cars cant do 0-60 mph in 7 odd seconds! (I know, its a very general statement, but you know what I mean)

Lets not forget that shinny thing thats hangs out the back of the engine!! I know theres some hot porkers out there and they spend LARGE amounts of money trying to get the gearbox to stay together, and I doubt weather many of them have 700 + hp!!

I just think we are all getting abit carried away.

Ill be placing my GTR order shortly (just working out how many stages to order!) and I will be looking for 500 - 550 hp, but I think that that is probably towards the limit of what you can put to the ground effectively , but more importantly, probably the limit of what I can handle as a driver (at least at this stage!!)

Doc,

You sound almost like Stig. We went to the factory for him to order his kit. He was talking about only putting a 350 BHP engine in as it was more than enough for theweight of the car etc. Over the following weeks, it gradually increased until he ended up ordering a 627 BHP supercharged monster

I think I said this last time mega HP was being discussed.
You cannot use the mega power in the corners, you can't use it all off the line (wheelspin) so it is only usefull when well under way.
This is what NOS was invented for.

It all depends what you want to use the car for. You may not be able to use all of the power off the line, or on corners, but when you're blasting along a nice piece of road at 190mph, and you get the urge to do 220, it's the number of ponies sitting behind your left (or right if you're foreign) ear that will determine whether you can do it, and how quickly it'll happen if you can.

If you think about it, you pull away from stationary once, and then the rest of the jourley is all in gear accelleration. Even a monster grunt mobile would have trouble spinning its wheels from 130mph in top gear

My definition of "too much power" is a car where you can't get your foot to the floor in any gear without breaking traction, or hitting the rev limiter before your foot kisses the carpet (or ally pannelling). I've never had a car like that, but I'd really like to find one

I'm no expert in these fields but I am interested in getting good performance from my car which is due on the road in about 3 weeks (I hope it’s ready as were going to Le Mans on the 11th June). My only understanding of NOS is that it is not practical from an insurance point of view as it must be completely disconnected for road use. Any suggestion that it could be used on public roads scares all the insurance companies away. I personally would not want to risk fitting it without telling the insurance company especially in light of a few mishaps lately with other Ultima owners and their cars.

The thing that makes Nitrous (not NOS) attractive is also what makes it unattractive. It's there only when you want it.

About traction, there are things you can do to increase it, but do compromise the performance of the car, so not really much point.

I really don't care if the wheels are spinning through a corner, as long as I have the skill to keep it on the road.

Seeing an Ultima drift through a corner at 100mph would be nice.

Too much power can be bad though. Take bikes...a 1000cc bike has it down the straights. However, a 750, even a 600 can be better in the twisties. You can push the smaller bikes harder, and so are more efficient. Quite often the 750 does the best. Has enough power to be faster than the 600, but not enough to be in control of.

The only way we can really know how much power is just right, is if someone records a build up of their car, including the strip and track times.

That said, there's no such thing as too much power.

About the lexus engine...it IS bother LIGHTER and STRONGER than the ls1/ls6. I know for a fact that it is lighter, by about 10-15kgs if I remember right.

It is stronger, most toyota engines are build that way (1jz, 2jz, 1uzfe etc).

However, the engine does have its drawbacks. It produces a lot less torque than the ls1/ls6. Produces less power, which is also made higher up. Hell, you're comparing an atmo 4L vs an atmo 5.7L. Not very fair.

Sling on a few turbos onto the Lexus and you have the advantage. Ease of tuning and creating power, quite reliable, more power, more torque, still lighter and stronger, and much cheaper.

Building the chevy will take quite a few more $$$, but still end up with a great engine. They are both great engines for an Ultima, just going achieving it in different ways.

I'm just going the v8 turbo route for a few reasons...it's cheaper, it's easier to tune (and make power), and it's different.

You say that the Lexus engine is 10-15Kg lighter, but then you say that you're going to load it up with a couple of turbos. I would guess that the plumbing involved in fitting a turbo might just negate the weight saving of fitting the Lexus angine in the first place.

Just chuck in a big Yank V8. These cars weren't designed to be rice burners

Exactly what Lexus model are you refering to?? We have been investigating the Lexus option and as we can see it it isn't very suitable for boosting (with stock internals) since the Compression is so high the Toyota however is ideal with it's low compression but the draw back with the Toyota is that it is made in cast iron. Do you actually have a low compression aluminium Lexus down under that we in Europe doesn't know about?
