Licence change of address advice
Discussion
I'm moving house soon so I'm gradually notifying all my contacts of my new address.
Obviously I have to change my driving licence but I remember reading of somebody who sent their licence into the useless fecks at the DVLA and when it returned his motorcycle entitlement had disappeared. He then had to re-sit his bike test because he had no proof of this.
I know there's a slim chance of this happening but I REALLY don't want to have to re-sit my bike test. I don't think a photocopy is sufficient evidence so what's the best way of ensuring I have proof of all the licence classes on my licence before I send it away.
Thanks.

Once upon a time on the Riverbank Mole, Badger and Ratty wete discussing exactly the same problem.
"What would you do Mole?" asked Badger.
"Well" said Mole disengaging from preparing the weekly shopping list. " If I was so concerned I would photostat my current Licence and submit it personally by visiting my local DVLA Office so that they could verify what Groups I had before they sent it off."
"Ummm" said Badger stroking his chin. "Hey Ratty what's your twisted pitch on this?" he asked.
"Ok" said Ratty eyes lowed to an evil slit, "I would keep my old Licence and send off for a new one with the new address on it and the appropriate fee and claim that I had lost my old one. When the new licence comes back then if the same groups are'nt on it I could say I had found my old one and show the difference. If all was OK I would destroy my old Licence as it is bad news to have two."
"Ummmmm " commented Badget again. "What you think Mole?".
Mole look non plussed, flicked his eyebrows, grabbed his pencil and shopping list and wrote - Whale Oil. Beef hooked.

I've still got my pink licence but the beggers at dvla invited me to pay for a shiney photocard item and send them all my personal identity stuff. My original torn birth certificate etc. Is there a cunning way to somehow retain the pink licence when I change address? I know I'm going to get pulled eventually. After 27 years of plod free motoring my time must be due sooner rather then later. That said, it'd be nice to speak with a real policeman doing his job.

I recently had to send my license back as those clever people at DVLA somehow managed to replace my old Pink Paper licence with a nice new Photocard & paper counterpart type.....and put my dad's details on it. Normally i'd see the funny side but as he died when i was 13 (23 years ago) i was less than impressed...
Luckily i kept a scanned copy of the old licence on the PC so i sent them a copy with a covering letter and it was all sorted out in just over a week

That was a serious guff! But like you, I always scan & store on PC important docs.
Certainly paid off in your case.

So, they sent you a photocard even though you hadn't sent them any i/d, ie birth certificate etc? Compounded it by sending your Dad's details, that's awful!
