Recently looked over a 1986 924s (114k miles) which with my untrained eye looked to be in very good condition.

The sills were good but painted black, is this normal? Oil was good with no evidence of gasket failure. Receipts showing belts changes relatively recently. On the test drive there was no whining noise and the car pulled strongly in all gears. No feeling of clutch slippage. Oil pressure was just under 5 when moving and stationary. Car has 12 month MOT. Shocks on rear glass and bonnet both functional. The car appeared to very original with a very clean interior.

Two areas of concern were that the was a small fluid puddle under the engine (slightly to the left when looking at the car). Didn't appear to be oil, could be power steering fluid?. There appears to be a small (2 inch) stress crack under the boot carpet and the gaps between the bumper and the rear wings was a little wide, nothing else to suggest rear damage. Also, slight crusting of the paint on the very edge of the rear offside wheel arch. Ok I know its a 20 year old car so I'm thinking overall its pretty good.

Can anyone point me in other areas to check please?

Any advice appreciated.

Captain

sounds ok, i wouldn't stress too much about the puddle, at that age and no doubt cheap price all cars will have some leaks, I'm currently looking for a merc sl at a lot more money and struggling to find one that isn't dropping oil, if it isn't oil and is either water/fuel or power steering fluid it should be pretty easy to sort, just find out what it is.

My 2.0 had black sills don't know if they all do, as long as they are solid then I would be more than happy, certainly the sills don't seem to rot badly, maybe because they are exposed with no dirt traps.

The stress crack could just be seam sealer? if it is metal then it wants sorting but will probably not be a major job, could be a £50 weld up and bodge can over with it being under carpet. But I haven't seen it so I don't know.

Oh and the gaps between bumper and wings is quite often wide, on mine it looked as if it was too big but had been like it since factory.

It would be unusual for the oil pressure to be as high as 5 bar on tickover when hot - check what it is with the ignition on and the engine not running when it should of course be zero!
