Planning on a trip down to the Columbus Hotel again

Ater last years stay, we decided it might be nice to let the train take the strain to get down to Nice but then drive back via Italy, Switzerland, Autobahn etc

Anyone used motorail?

No but I was planning to do the same because I worked out the cost of petrol in the Murcie coming back from say Nice is about the same as the train..
They cater for specialist type vehicles as well. I just want to avoid the boring 8 hr journey through France on the way back. Will be doing it later this year I think

Really? I've looked before and it just didn't add up (if you just go on the fuel costs anyway). It's ages since I looked but here www.raileurope.co.uk/frenchmotorail/ seems to suggest in the peak season it's over double worst case fuel usage (i.e. pressing on a bit all the way )

Depends how far you have to travel. If you're going to take two days to drive it you'll need to factor in the cost of a hotel as well, whereas you can sleep on the train. Also, don't forget you'll also be saving abit on the tolls.

I've done it a couple of times but not recently. It's not cheap but at the same time it doesn't work out alot more than driving. It's more the convenience, you go to sleep in Calais and wake up in Nice! Nice!

Trouble last year was fitting in all the roads and places we wanted to visit, didn't get to the Col de Turini or the Millau Bridge, so want to miss the rather boring drag down there and arrive fresh

Coming back? Sussenpass in Switzerland for starters

There are also limits on ground clearance to consider. This means taking a Ferrari rather risky. I have done it in pre planned group where they set up for taking Ferrari's onboard.

Also taken TVR's and Porkas on the train. IMO it's worth it to arrive refreshed and ready to playclap

There are specialist firms that provide a shuttle service from the UK to Nice airport....You get off the plane to find your Lamborghini sitting there in the sunshine full of fuel and with your luggage already in it. Come on guys get with the programme here. If you do go down check out Vignette Haute as a place to stay. If you ask for it in advance you will be given your own garage with your own key, from memory they have about ten, that aside the hotel is definately an experience. Not too expensive but one mans idea of the perfect hotel. Outside your room I think they only use candle light and all the staff wear slightly bizaar medieval costumes. In the dining room it gets even more bizaar as it is a stable, well half of it is actually a stable with all sorts of animals living there. The wine list is awesome as they buy everything from auction and pass it on to their guest at cost. A memorable experience, go on try it! Oh and don't forget to ask to see the Victorian pornography museum!

just check that your car will go on the train, they have restrictions on width and ground clearance. TRy P&O ferries as an alternative, who take the car around portugal/spain and then ultimately to the Riviera.

Hope this helps.

Hmmm... I see what you mean. The guy who advised me clearly must have been on drugs. Maybe P&O hook up with another ferry company to complete the journey (really clutching at straws now).

We are taking the 430 from Plymouth to Santander which is a much quicker crossing than the P & O route. Either way you should be able to sort a scenic route accross the mountains to s-o-fbounce
