Just completed first week of Chim ownership.
Decided to give it a good clean.
Driver's door mirror fell off in my hand when polishing it.

Turns out it's NOT the tripod, but the mounting plate in the mirror has snapped.
Couldn't work out how to get the glass off (Steve Heath's 2nd Edition explained, but didn't work), so have left for now.
Noted the links on here for replacement innards.

Whilst the mirror was resting against the door skin (held on only by wires!) it "bounced" on the door opener a few times, and blew the solenoid.
I've successfully swapped the dead solenoid with the one from the passenger side, so at least you can get in the car!

I then took it out for a spin and just overtook everything; reminded me of motorcycling..
Then had my first scare.... Going from first to second gear I managed to light the back up, causing it to fishtail up the road... ooh, that was fun. eek
Pls don't tell SWMBO as theoretically it's her car... I just get to take it for "testdrives" after spannering it! driving

Whilst I haven't fixed the mirror and/or the solenoid yet, I did rely on this forum when the Steve Heath book lacked clarity.
So this note is a thanks one and all! clap

Cheers,
LordLanky.

If you're having difficulties with the mirror assembly, don't worry it's not too hard. Watch out for scratching the mirror when you push the tab.

Here are some photos showing the assembly: www.flickr.com/photos/grcm/tags/mirror/

If you need more info, I listed the location of the original patent docs for the mirror assembly in a previous thread here (circa 18 months ago). They show precisely how it all fits together.

Biggiles,

Photos are great. Thanks.
I was out there first thing with a plastic knife, but for the life of me I cannot have the glass pop off. I even tried doing the same on the passenger side. No joy.

I popped in to see the guys that I bought it from and they quickly said, "just bring it in, we'll sort it"!

I was on my way to Maplins to get one of the door motors, which I have now installed, so that's one problem down, just the mirror to solve.

If you see a gaffer taped up mirror on a Chim, please don't scoff, it's mid-fix!

Can anyone recommend a TVR "specialist" in Sussex (West preferred, but any excuse to drive it!), even the southern reaches of Surrey would be okay....?

Cheers,
LordLanky.
