Hamilton - astounding progress.

No doubt this will be one of many posts which will become amalgamated in praise of Lewis Hamilton.
But I think what he did today was astounding.
Because, for me what he did do was
blow the doors off the Double World Champion.
That was really why Hamilton was punching the air at the finish.
That's what is significant about this podium finish/2nd place. Not once did Alonso show more speed than Hamilton this weekend and he must have had full technical knowledge as to where Hamilton's speed was.
I wonder what Alonso's lack of pace was actually down to.
The de-briefing sessions at McLaren will have been interesting.
Massa, Hamilton and Heidfeld were all pretty mighty today for me.

I agree, he is absolutely amazing. We're watching sporting history here, not to mention the next BBC Sports personality of the year.

I agree, he was storming through the field today, it really was a shame his car let him down.
Also was pleased with Heidfeld's performance, a driver I have rated for some time, it will be good to see him do well in a performing BMW this year.
Alonso must be well hacked off that the first time he comes up against a decent team-mate he starts to struggle. I think he will finish ahead of Hamilton in the Drivers title, but expect Hamilton to have the upper hand in 2008.
As for Raikkonen, is it just my impression, or does he seem to be just coasting? I thought he would want to quickly put Massa in his place and then get the team behind him. But he only seems to be up for the fight when he has a clear car advantage. As the fastest driver on the grid I expected him to pull out an advantage in the early part of the season (because of Ferrari's status with Bridgestone) and then consolodate over the course of the season, but he looks totally disinterested.
Finally, spare a thought for poor old James Allen...
Less than a year after having his nose surgically attached to Jenson Button's anus (Hungary 2006), he now has to have it removed and attached to Hamilton's rear end. This is the problem with only having one nose - not enough arses to lick at the same time.

I don't think Raikkonen's coasting - but he was definitely waiting for the pit stops to pass rather than risking it on track. All too familiar, and pretty depressing when you see Coulthard, Rosberg and Heidfeld all pull off good, sound overtakes on merit.
Massa seems to shine if he's out front, often struggling for outright pace if he's behind anyone. He definitely ran a very good and consistent race today. Raikkonen's pace didn't look quick because Massa was out front.
Because of Massa's off days, it's perceived that Raikkonen's the faster driver and I'm not sure he really is. I think he's consistently quick where Massa has good days and bad days, and therefore is percieved to be slower in general.

short list then.... looks like it'll be another royal...I think of all the drivers yesterday, DC was the man of the day. To work through the field as he did from the back of the grid to a points finish was simply stunning. Shame the car gave him another DNF though becuase those few points would have been fully deserved.

He was in the McLaren at a time when it was the undoubted class of the field, and yet, in 1999, even with the added benefit of Schumacher's broken leg, he still couldn't finish the job.

Can't say DC is more deserving of the Macca drive than either of their two current drivers surely? He's had his chance at the sharp end of the grid but he really seems to have found himself scrapping it out in the midfield, he's certainly turned around my perception of him.
