OK, I've lurked and read and drooled, now, if all goes well tomorrow, I'll be buying a Chim 4.5 It's R reg. I've had a test drive today, I love it and tomorrow I'm going to give it a good look round, I couldn't give it a good look round today since I was still wearing the rose tinted specs. What should I look out for?

I looked for the following when I bought my 450

Full service history (recognised independent or TVR dealer)
General history of vehicle (receipts etc) - check mileage matches the history
HPI check - essential

Careful check of bodywork for damage esp surface cracks
Check fabric hood and stiching around the rear plastic screen

Wishbones, for signs of more than superficial corrosion
Tyre wear pattern
Evidence of wheel damage
Sump surface for damage
Evidence of leaks - easier if its a private seller - look on the ground where its normally parked

Absence of water leaks into interior by feel and sniff

Bonnet up/ engine running after test drive: listen for clicking (exhaust manifold gasket leaks) and rattles from engine; check oil filler cap and look inside for white sludgy emulsion (head gasket duff)

Excess play in steering and leaks from rack

On test drive: gearbox feel (ease of gearchange, lack of grab on lever); clutch biting point; sign of pulling to one side under breaking; diff clunk; knocking from rear over rough surfaces (probably new shockers required but maybe knackered bushes); check cooling fans come on around 90 degrees and go off.

There's something to go on with - others will no doubt add to the list. Ideally take someone with you who knows what to look for. Don't let the seller pester you while your're doing your check. Ask for some space and time - it's a big decision and worth doing properly.

Good luck
Hutch
