Sorry if this has been posted by others before but can anyone recommend any Books on Digital Photography.

I am OK at doing snaps, and seem to work well despite my lack of knowledge. I would like to understand things like focus, ISO, histograms etc etc

Many thanks in anticipation of your assistance

Nick

The photoshop (CS1 or 2 etc) book for digital photogs by Scott Kelby is great for using PS, there is another by Martin Evening too thats worth a look.

I too am interested to get a tequniques and ideas book with useful tips and tutorials etc, as I currently have a £20 credit on my Amazon account.

you don't need a book to tell you all there. there are a good few websites that explain it all.

Basic Photography. I believe it is widely regarded as the photographers bible. I've not read it all yet - working my way through it slowly - but it gives good easy-to-understand explanations of everything you could want to know, with helpful diagrams where necessary. It covers film and digital. I think I have the 7th edition.

Seconded yes (and the term basic, it really is not...!)

Are there any similar books to the Langford one whcih don't cover the film and processing stuff, seems like a waste of paper now we're digital.

My sister got me the Ansell Adams beginner book but it was all about film and precseessing and there was notheing much in it that I could relate to.

I reckon a years subscription to Practical Photog magazine is as good an idea as buying any £25 book!

Don't know about any others, but this one (now 8th edition) certainly seems very comprehensive. There is also an advanced version as well

I was having a flick through these in Borders the other day and was quite tempted (but had spent all my money on the camera!)

What is the consensus on photog mags? I've been tempted as typically they will be seasonal (i.e. this is how to take a good autumn shot, this is how to take a good snow shot etc. etc) and thought there would be some interesting reads? (That plus I fly way too much so magazines are my friend!)

So, which is deemed the one to get (the Evo of photography, if you like) for a digital SLR user?

THanks!

I was going to ask the same question. I've been reading Digital Camera magazine since January, and while it is interesting, with good tips and reviews etc, I don't know how the others compare. So I was going to try Practical Photography next month, and work my way through the others until I can decide lol.

Sorry that probably doesn't help you!

I bought "digital camera mag" a little while ago and while good, it seemed more geared towards a purchasing person including all the little point/shoot cameras. Very good indeed, but for someone wanting tips on photography itself I thought it not speicifc enough. Might give it another go though...?!

I'll buy one for a c**y of lightroom.

Think you should pop over to mine one weekend and bring your kit.

Anyone else up for a days photography in Cambridge?

Best photography I have ever read, and great for the basics, is Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson. It's now been updated for digital, too. Explanation of ISO, shutter speed and aperture is superb for a beginner.
