Was using my Canon 20D yesterday taking some pics at a car show, one minute the CF (Compact Flash) card is working, next it decides to stop.
Tried reading it in my p.c. and the p.c. recognises the card but says it's "protected" i.e. broken.
Shook the card gently and it appears something inside it has broken
Any suggestions as to retrieving pics.....or are they lost forever?
It's a 2GB Hitachi Microdrive which I bought in the USA in Oct 2004 and I have only used the camera about 20 times since then!

Microdrives are effectively tiny hard drives. We were involved from the first samples with them using them within some of our embedded equipment, but gave up with them quickly once flash cards became big enough. You have to treat them so gently, but people sometimes forget and treat them roughly like flash.
It rather sounds like it's bust I'm afraid, but on the bright side, 2Gb compact flash are cheap enough these days. i.e.
