excuse my ignorance - but what effect does this has on the running of the car?

It removes restriction in the exhaust so gives a slight gain in power, and a noticeable increase in exhaust noise! Emissions will be slightly higher, it may be necessary to replace the cats for the MoT when it comes around, unless you can find a friendly MoT'er.

De-catting will increase performance - noticeably. No other work done with mine, running very well. As far as noise goes, depends how you drive it: can be quiet or loud. You'll find out pretty quick - and it is definitely worth it.

Richard - will you be at either battle of the 6s or supercar sunday would be good to have a look at your car and listen to the exhaust 1st hand, something i like to do before taking the plunge

You will notice the noise, I doubt you'll notice anything else. Loss of heat sink is worthwhile.
