To remedy my over-heating problem on my 87TE I wish to replace my thermostat..only if I could just find it. Can anyone please advise me where to locate it and do they recommend a generic replacement which would be cheaper than the original. Thank you! Jim

Jim,

Your 'T'stat is located just to the right of the intake cam cover on the front of the engine. The housing is that 'Snakey' aluminum tube which wraps around the timing belt. 2-13mm bolts hold it on. Underneath you'll find the 'T'stat.

As far as replacement, there are a number of Chevy 'T'stats which will work. Take the old one along with you for comparison. Be sure to get one w/ the correct temp for the clime in your region. Also, be sure it has a 'weephole' in the same place as the old one and upon installation, be sure the 'weephole' goes in the same orientation as the old one as this is where your temp sender for the temp gauge gets it's sampling.

Be sure to replace the paper gasket (you'll find a generic which matches) and seal it w/ Hylomar® on both sides. Torque the bolts to no more than 13 ft./lbs. or it's 'Bon Soir Monsieur Waterpump'! Good Luck! Happy Motoring! Jim'85TE
