What's the general view on taking safe gambles in the interests of maximum progress? For example, using an unusual lane in the knowledge that if the other one does get moving in time then you will have to turn right / go around a roundabout / end up on the wrong motorway for a few miles. I must admit that I probably do this sort of thing too much. It's never unsafe as such, but after having to circle a roundabout today I have decided to reevaluate this type of plan. Thoughts?

""What's the general view on taking safe gambles""

Not the general view...just mine...in the time you have taken to post this and the time I have taken to comment...an hour?

Someone has DIED on our roads...affecting maybe a few hundred close and distant family, workmates, Police and Ambulance guys clearing up the mess...and a Policeman knocking on a door somewhere...wondering how to break the news.

Not having a go Pal...for a safe gamble, buy a Lottery ticket?

Living on a coastal resort where the council see fit to direct tourist traffic the most ridiculous route into, around and out of the town it will often save me a good 10 minutes coming home by using a right hand turn lane up to traffic lights then filter left after the traffic lights where there's a hundred yars to do so. There's the opportunity to do this on a couple of stretches of road. If thats the sort of 'safe gamble' you refer to then yeah I do it a lot and must have saved myself hours and hours of sitting in the car.

BOF - get a grip - the OP is clearly not talking about risks, but about "cheeky" use of lanes at junctions / roundabouts.

There's been a lot of posts about this, whether it is right or wrong - but I'm of the opinion that *so long as it isn't inherently unsafe* that there's no real reason not to...even to the point where using the RHL at a roundabout, going full circle and then left can often be quicker than using the LHL.

I'd add to that "and so long as it doesn't decrease the overall traffic throughput". There's little I hate more than, for example, the people who weave between lanes in very slow moving motorway traffic in an attempt to go 2mph faster and in doing so make all the lanes stop just behind them.

imbecile,

Having read tiggers post and re-read your post in this context, my reply was a bit over the top - my apology for the mis-understanding.

I am out tomorrow at 10 with a 70 year old and on Saturday at 9 with a 20 year old - the word 'risk' is like a red rag to a bull to me...

To me all the times that people go all the way round a roundabout in rush hour does "decrease throughput", because if pulling left you don't get in the way of anyone as you have to give way. Going all the way around you stop traffic at 4 (usually) entries onto roundabout. I see people doing this most days to save about 3 minutes. IMHO if people didn't do it most of the queue would disappear so it is selfish

No problem, I think I was probably a bit, er, curt with my response, and I've never been that good for thread titles...

Enjoy the OAP!
