Evening gents,
I've had squeaking brakes on my 530d since I bought it in Jan. Not when braking hard, but just at low speeds as stoping at lights etc. Thought maybe the pads were low, but had a service at BMW Milton Keynes a couple of weeks back and they tell me I have loads of life left in pads and discs. I've driven 9,000 miles since getting it and they're still squeaking which is proving pretty annoying...

When I was at BMW, the service manager said to brake really heavily from motorway speeds a few times to clear build up from the discs. Not sure whether that's a great idea - any else heard that/tried that and found it to work, or got any other ideas?

Feather the brake pedal at about 30mph just so the brakes lightly binde for about 400 yrds drive for a few miles to cool the brakes and do it again.
Heavy braking will shorten the life of the pad as it overheats

Does an indicator light come on in the e39 when the brakes are low?

Mine are squeeking too, in much the same way.

I was told by the garage I'd see a light when they were low, and that I'd then have a mm or 2 before they get to the metal, so enough time to bring it in...

Blackspider - cool, I'll give that a go...

When this happened to me it turned out to be gritty
muck getting into the cylinders that move the brake pads
and causing squeeking when the brake pedal
was pressed.

I got it sorted out by my local MOT station,
which was handy as the week before I had set
a new personal best ;->
