Can anyone tell me if oil can be expected to accumulate in the sponge of a standard intake filter (Cerb speed six). Does not seem right to me. The only oil I would expect would be at switch off when vapour can dissipate in whichever direction it feels happiest. During normal running it would surely need overfill or leaking inlet valves to push oil up to the Sponge?

Has anyone ideas or had experience of this?

On some cars the crank case breather is plumbed in to the air filter. It's normal to get small quantities of oil mist blown out of the breather and these can settle and accumulate in the breather hose and air filter.

The oil tank breather is connected to the airbox, if excessive ammounts are in the airbox it could be from over filling the tank with oil.

The oil has not been overfilled. No silly mistakes there I'm afraid, so the question is how much oil is normal, and why is it on the air intake filter and not on the side of the inlet manifold?

If I am being dopey, please speak up!!

Another thought - if this had had a green filter mod, which it hasn't, does the breather arrangent change? If not, with the amount of Oil I am talking about, it would not be able to suck period.

I'm pretty sure the stanndard foam filter was the pre-oiled type in my Cerb S6, so as long as it's not dripping its ok. scratchchin

Excessive oil coming through the crank case breather indicates a high crank case pressure. This is symptomatic of worn piston rings.

Hi !

My Cerb S6 has the original type of air filter mounted. It is a washable foam filter which should be treated with a special air filter oil when you have washed it. The oil is there to help the filter to collect small particles that wouldn´t be catched by the filter if it was dry. The same kind of foam filters are very common on dirtbikes.
For the filter in my Cerb i have used a oil that was for Pipercross filters used on dirtbikes.

K&N filters also use a oil to get the better filtering of the air for the engine.

Thanks Peppe

Can anyone advise on best oils for this? Can regular cerb engine oils be used?

The oil should be a special air filter oil. I use a oil from Castrol. On the can it is labeled Castrol foam air filter oil.
