I'm currently setting up my engine and reading through the instructions from the manual. It says (after setting the idler screw so the throttle pots read 19%) to use a pipe clamp to block off the purge pipe and shows a picture. Can't see the picture clearly enough and wondered if anyone can explain which pipe the manual is talking about.

Am I correct in thinking its the pipe that connects to the underside of the fuel pressure regulator?

Cheers for any help.
Si

P.S. It's a 4.5 by the way.

You definitely must not try to clamp off the fuel lines to or from the fuel pressure regulator, and as far as I know there are no other lines to it on your car, so I think the answer is a firm "no".

I suspect the purge line may be a reference to the purge line to the carbon cannister, but I don't know where that is in your engine bay or even whether you actually have one (although I expect you do).

The cerb does have a carbon cannister but the clamping is shown somewhere near this pressure regulator, just can't make out which pipe it is.

There should be two pipes from the rear of both intake manifolds that connect with a 4 way that sits under the fuel regulator.

The purge pipe is the one that comes out of the back of this 4 way and disappears through the firewall with the fuel lines and harness.

The pipe coming out of the front of teh 4 way (if fitted) connects to the off side air box.

This is all on a 98 4.2 so may be different on a 4.5.

And also Trackcar doesn't bother clamping it off. He reckons you get a better result if the pots are setup with the car in the form it will be in when running on the road - So airboxes on and purge pipe not clamped off.

Thanks Mike, I set it up just as you mentioned Joo at Trackcar doing it!

It was bloody fiddly but managed to get the adaptives 1&2 close together and as close to zero as poss, actually got it to 6-7 but couldn't get it down any more without going too far the other way. The engine now ticks over at 1100 which is a little high but the throttle positions at tick over are 15-16% which is low.

Amazingly the car runs very well with this set-up, just wish I could get the tickover down and the throttle positions up!!

Any tips anyone?

according to your profile you have a 4.5 so, from what i have heard is that the 4.5 t-postions are not the 19 like the 4.2 but more like 17 as they swallow more air.

what is the ignition timing saying? this will give an indicator as to what the ECU is trying to do to get the idle down.

Thats very interesting! The ignition is saying 14+ degrees.

the timing should be around 17....so at 14, the ECU is retarding the timing to reduce the idle speed which (i could be wrong) means the idle is physically too high. back the idle screw off a bit and re-adjust the pots
