Not sure if you recall, but the symptom on my car was the alternator pulley being able to spin independently of the engine and it not restarting. I thought it was just the shaft, but it wasn't.......it was the timing chain. Heads coming off today, needs some new valves!

I used to have a Fiat Coupe and I was always paranoid that the belt was going to break. Got the Cerb and assumed I wouldn't need to worry about such an occurence because it had a chain.....oh well, luckily it's all under warranty!

Real sorry to hear that, mine went on Saturday.
How long had you had the car?

I don't think you do need to worry about the chain breaking.

I think its likely something broke the chain.

Have had the car since October 06 and done 5k miles, it had only done 19k when I bought it and it is a '98 model. Just pleased I did that many miles well within the one years warranty period.

They reckon it should be fixed by end of next week, it is taking up their lift so they are keen to get it done!

That sounds sinister! What sort of 'something'?

Hi Will,

Sorry to hear of your problems, but as long as it's in goods hands it can be bought back to life even better than before

I know what you mean about the Coupe, I too had one a few years ago and was also paranoid about the dreaded "cambelt" going snap......not that it ever did of course. You really put some miles on your Coupe, so did you ever mod it and if so how do you find it compares to the Cerb? For me the Cerb was a big step up, initially this was not in performance terms but it was certainly a step up with regard to grin factor, noise and driveability.

Jules.

There are some nylon guides that the chain runs in at the front of the engine. Sometimes the bolts holding these on work loose and fall down into the chain and snap it. Or is you're lucky (as happened to mine) just end up sitting in the sump and come out with the oil when its drained.

Still required the engine coming out to put a new bolt in though (and a new chain while we were there)

Hi Jules,

Thanks for the encouragement!

I kept my Coupe 20VT standard, I needed it to get to work at the time so I didn't mod it through fear of overstressing something and being left without a car! I just kept well on top of maintenance myself, I sold it to Carlt on the FCCUK forum and he was so impressed (original turbo, clutch, good history etc) that he smartened it up replaced certain parts and sold it on! Was well chuffed with that!

When I first drove the Cerbera, it was on empty roads and I was just trying out the acceleration. Initially I thought it didn't feel that much quicker than the Coupe, only when there were other cars around did I realise the performance was on a different plane. I thought why isn't anyone else accelerating, they're all disappearing! Also, with the Coupe it didn't matter what the weather was like, you could go super quick all the time, good old Viscodrive! I only got the Cerb in October so have only driven in cold and usually damp conditions, very aware of traction limitations.

I know what you mean about the difference, going out in the Coupe was excellent fun, but it is definitely a great event owning and going out in the Cerb. Shame mine gave up just as the fine weather started!

Cheers!

I'll go and have a look on Saturday, it will be interesting to see it in its stripped down state! I will check to see if any bolts are missing!

I think I can remember you from FCCUK. Carlt buys a fair few Coupes and sells them on at a nice profit, good luck to him but that's the advantage of his trade.

Hope all goes well with the Cerb...

Jules.
