Fedup with DERBY roadworks and quality?
Discussion
I can't say I have any grumbles actually, the roads in and around Derby are very good. Lots of road works going on in town at the moment, which is a pain in the bum, but that's something entirely different. Be good when its all done.
My gripe is with the ever increasing amount of congestion creation schemes and deliberate bottle necking to snarl the roads up on purpose and discourage car use, not the state of the actual tarmac.

Well this is the guy in charge, so i'd encourage you to air your views.
The roadworks on Eastgate haven't increased capacity in any way, just narrowed the lanes down - it'll have the placebo effect after all the cones are gone - wow this is great; Actually this is how it always was. There are potholes and ruts all over the place - Ok if you drive a Beutiful Bentley, but no good for a stiffly set up car, or one without modern suspension. They are turning roundabouts all over Derby into trafficlight islands, a moronic oxymoron if i ever saw one. They seem to be bringing everything down to idiot level. Islands promote freeflow with traffic taking its turn, no lets stick some bleedin' lights on it so no-one has to use their initiative.

Yes, I agree, that's what I meant by congestion creation schemes. The Little Eaton roundabout on the A38 by the Little Chef is a prime example. This used to be a very free flowing roundabout during the day and was never busy or congested, I used to go through there several times a day at all times of the day for years on end, it wasn't broke. Now it is traffic lighted and it is like rush hour all the time, queuing in all directions. For some reason they do vary the times when the lights are operational, when the lights are off, it flows smoothly. For some reason you can go through at 2pm on say a Tuesday, lights are off, great, straight through, but 2pm Wednesday, lights are on, traffic is backed up to Pentagon. The past 3-6 months has seen massive increases in congestion in Derby, way beyond any proportional increase in traffic that may have occured, and its not down to roadworks, someone must be screwing it up deliberately and with malice aforethought. I have been here ten years, and you expect, but hardly notice, a deterioration over many years, as its gradual and you get used to it. But we do seem to have taken one massive quick hit of mega congestion at rush hour levels but outside of the rush hour, in just a few months. Where has it come from?
Another bad one is the A52 into Derby outside of rush hour from the Wyvern retail park, used to come onto the A52 towards the Pentagon at say 11.30 am or 3.15pm, hardly any traffic and you would flow up to the lights, no congestion. Now, at any time of day, you are queuing at the Wyvern. FFS why? it wasnt like that earlier on this year, only at rush hour.
I will be e-mailing that contact. Thanks.
You know i have a big big problem driving around in Derby. There are some areas that are a no go zone for me to drive my ferrari or at times my motor bike. This is mainly due to huge bloody speed bumps and bloody deep pot holes
Take Uppersdale road for example, i see every day cars not slowing down at all but just driving over them like they are not there. I do the same my self in my Range Rover. But when i have ever drove my 355 down that area, no matter how slow and i mean slow i drive (1mph!!!!) the very high speed bumps drag and tear at the under tray. Then drivers behind me are pissed because i an driving over them to slowly trying to avoid damaging my car
Like its my fault that the bloody damaging bumps are there
Only this winter gone i had to replace my under tray at a cost of grands because of the extensive damage
.
IMO speed bumps are out to damage my 355 and i am very pissed of about it. The pot holes are just as bad, they seem to just appear no matter how care full one drives and causes great damage to my front spoiler and buckle my wheels
Also while on about the Derby roads. Seems to me that they are taking away the roads from drivers by blocking of streets, making them one way streets and even so called bloody home zones" WTF!!!!
So by restricting access to a high percentage of roads around Derby, one is forced to use only certain roads that they want you to drive down
And you know that they want you to go down these roads because you will always find a couple of t
ts in yellow jackets and clip boards ready to report to the Council that there is indeed congestion in that area and the level of traffic has risen. So lets tax them with a road pricing/taxing sceam.FA CRYING OUT LOUD!!!!
They said 10 years ago that having all these surveillance cameras in Derby that it would be a safer place. So they hit is with a Council tax increase. Only to hear on the local news last month that the City centre, right out side the council house and assembly rooms there is a massive problem with muggings, so bi a problem that there was a increased police presence. Yes the very same assembly rooms and council houses that has 10 surveillance/big brother cameras watching us to stop this type of problem. YEA RIGHT!!! No council tax rebate no apology for there hair brained sceam. Just as we will get no apology or rebate or indeed our roads back when the council themselves cause the grid lock in Derby dude to there taking roads away from us and restricting our movements.
And hey here's a good idea. Instead of blaming every accident on the motorist that involves a pedestrian/child. Teach the green X code to the children playing in the streets. One does not see TV campaigns any more, teaching "STOP, LOOK, LISTEN". I am sure that would save alot of young lives. Its called educating both driver and pedestrian. I taught my young children the code and wish they would teach it again in the schools. All i see is adverts for drivers to cut speed all over the place. Lets educate both driver and child ey " Stop LOOK LISTEN".
Hey rant over, i was on a roll
Pissed of??? Ya dammed right i am.

Lets have a heated debate.......
2 points for me :
1. I drive 30,000 miles per year and how come when its school holidays, there are no traffic problems in town's and cities??? Or any where for that matter. This is really true, AND I have a missus who drives our son to work every day so Im no better!!!!
2. Why have we got a new one way bus lane going into Derby past the Broadway pub????? 1 way I say. Into Derby, not out!!!!!! Idgets!!!!

Now, as it happens, during rush hour, you are correct, but during the day, it's all screwed up around Derby like it is rush hour. So how have they managed that then? At half term, during rush hour, no problems, but the rest of the day it's chokka. That has got to be organised. Email: David.Gartside@derby.gov.uk
Spider: i have the very same problem in my Integra, not a supersports like yours, but a stiff, slightly lower than most coupe. Nottingham road through Chaddesden has two sunken manhole covers that I have to weave. They are definately deeper than a couple of inches and flex the car and crash the suspension. Don't even get me started on the 'tank traps' or 'cadbury style' speed bumps up morley road in Chaddesden.
I sent this man an email today regarding our situation at work as artics delivering stock have to negociate a narrow road with parked cars either side, and I told him in the email that he would be hearing from me on other road matters within the city.
I believe in telling these folk how it is for the little man travelling around the city whilst they sit in the council house and think up more nanny state ideas to 'cut congestion' - which is bollox, they want to cut congestion by stopping good folk driving at all. They all probably went to work on the bus anyway - so thats why we have bus lanes eh?!

Remember, it is generally thought that for one reasoned complaint there are over 100 likeminded people.
By whom is this thought? If you could quote the soource it would be useful in all sorts of arguments in the future

BTW - I think the congestion is Derby is a fix too - I can see no reason why it should be worse than just about everwhere else. OR perhaps it's DerbySHIRE - I went to Chesterfield this week - it was as bad as Derby.
This statistic was taken from the ITC (Internation Televison Commision) in a letter replying to a complaint a couple of years back. It's not really a hard stat, but it was quoted by ITC as their experiance. Minimax, do you live in Derby, if not why comment?
Anyway, thats not really relevant, what is relevant for us Derbians is making our views heard to this Gartside chap. At present our road tax and fuel duty is being used to strangle the road systems around Derby, and doesn't seem to be going into the upkeep of the black stuff. It's my sheer irritation in the traffic management, ruts and potholes that I encounter day in day out that has made me respond. Why should we stay quiet if we think that what the council are doing to the roads is a bunch of crap?

I beg your pardon?
if I don't live in Derby that makes me not qualified to comment on your thread?
boswellox!
look before you leap old boy, I worked in Derby city centre for 6 months, I used to live in Nottingham for many years and this involved travelling to Derby frequently, and even though I move around the country a lot I still go to Derby once a month or so.
does that make me qualified to pronounce on the thread matey?
to be fair, I haven't actually commented on the topic of the thread, i've only voiced my opinion on the quality of your above statement.
however.....
traffic in Derby is an arse. when I used to commute, I could never work out why it seemed to back all the way up the A52 to the Shell garage when Derby was such a small place..
the roadworks from pentagon to the north ring road (still A52 I think) were shockingly badly managed and used to boil my urine daily...and the overall quality of the tarmac was atrocious too, particularly along the strand which eventually damaged my suspension.
although,
road quality in cheshire is worse

Sorry to pick you up on that, but it isnt. Our council tax will be paying for it. VEL and fuel duty goes directly to the exchequer and is nothing to do with the roads or transport. As you were.

Wasn't having a go mate, just seemed to be sucking some wind out of the sails, 'tis all.
Anyhow, moving on, i'd happily research the names and contact details of the person in charge for each county and post them up in the respective area forums. I think that many people just take the road system as it evolves, and I firmly believe that it is evolving to try and disuade us from our cars. I know that some changes have improved things considerably, and i'm all for safety outside schools etc... but we, Pistonheads as a large number of people and car enthusiasts can make a change if we are all passionate enough about what we enjoy.
That is where I am coming from.

Derby's roads and traffic are unnecessarily bad. The A52-Pentagon Island. The roadworks that are interminably slow. Those bl**dy traffic lights up towards the A38 Kingsway junction, ditto the ones at Queensway. The general state of the tarmac. The parking ticket I got that didn't have anything attached to my windscreen, just a letter through the post saying they HAD stuck it to my windscreen - and they wondered why I wasn't willing to just declare myself guilty.
Having said all that, be glad you don't live in West Yorkshire. I'd take Derby's roads over Huddersfield's every day:
- Almost 2 hours to get 18 miles on the motorway to Leeds every morning.
- The singularly worst surfaced road - consistently - I've found in Britain... 10 years it's been this bad and has dented rims on 4 of my cars over the last 8 years. (Road through Birkby)
- What was a 2-lane 50mph dual carriageway - the main road from the motorway into the town. That was then reduced to one lane. And then reduced to 30mph. And then had traffic lights put on it. And then had a jut-out put on the single remaining lane so that when buses stop, cars can't overtake because the bus drivers complained about not being allowed back in again. And my favourite of all? Putting more traffic lights put on it three metres after a roundabout. 150 metres from the hospital. Well done people - not only causing a nuisance to drivers and polluting the environment with congestion, but killing sick people. Congrats. New Hey Road - welcome to the testing ground of the world's worst highways policies.

With Derbys track record of road schemes I'm not looking forward to the work being carried out around Radio Derby and Friargate. Most of the traffic travelling from A38 (Burton) trying to get to A52(Nottingham) passes through here.
The first scheme I can remember that I couldn't understand was, why did they put a roundabout at Markeaton and Kingsway, instead of a fly over? Surely this would of allowed the through traffic to flow past without having to stop for two roundabouts causing congestion and pollution.
Another one I liked was the traffic lights #sigh# at Five laps. Millions of pounds were spent, and from what I heard, they had to switch them off at certain times because they caused more congestion, way to go Derby!
I believe there is some sort of tie between the traffic light manufacturers and Derby Council. Spider Island, I've never managed to count all the sets of lights there, lol.
