Hello all,

After what I calculate to be at least 2 years of regular lurking activity on here, I've decided that I'll join in!

Here goes...

Hello. My name is John and I was a lurker.

Seeing as it took this long simply to join a forum you can imagine what a decision buying a new car is turning out to be I've hankered after a Porsche for a long time. Indeed, judging by the cash spent on 911 & PW etc. magazines over the last few years I'd probably have had a good deposit. So, the dilemma is:

Moving to a new job, c.50 mile round commute and bidding farewell to Co. car.
I'm ideally looking at around a £15,000 budget and was originally looking at Audi TT's but have spotted 2.7 Boxters in this range which is sorely tempting to say the least. However,

Am I likely to find a decent one for this £?
I've done LOTS of searching on here and elsewhere and feel I'd definitely want to go for a Porsche warranty in yr 1 which I guess is an 01 car. Is this simply a case of booking/paying for the inspection and paying your £900?
Does this mean all 2.5's are too old to qualify? - OPC Hatfield have a low miles 98 but presumably this would be too old for warranty?
If I go for an older car what cost should I budget for if RMS dies?
Are most independent dealers OK with these inspections or should private sales be worth considering?

Questions, questions but this is an exciting prospect...

I'd appreciate any opinions /experiences (or biased encouragement for the plan) regarding the above.

Many Thanks

John

Don

For 15K you should be able to get a nice, though early, 2.7 986.

If you want peace of mind the warranty will be best part of £900 and the OPC inspection £200 or so.

If that sounds a bit rich you could investigate schemes like the Hartech one (excellent bloke posts on here) or you could take a punt and just keep it well maintained at a good independent. If RMS goes its many hundreds to small thousands I believe - but that hasn't been a problem on either of my 986S cars.

Full service history a must - and on the nose. Nice if its main dealer but the well known good independents have an excellent reputaion (you can check them out on here). I use Northway Porsche in Theale myself for discs/pads/stuff and Guildford OPC to stamp the book.

If its been sold by an OPC then it automatically comes with 12 months Porsche warranty.

Many Thanks!

Does anyone have experience of reasonably high annual mileage in a 2.5/2.7? I'd be interested to get an idea of costs etc.

The best way to buy a Boxster privately is to agree a price with the seller which includes putting a years OPC warranty on the car with the seller covering the cost of any fault correction which is required.

Its a buyers market at the moment for Boxsters with lots available and sellers getting really low bids on them. If you make an offer a little closer to the asking you shoud be able to find a seller willing to do this if they are confident in their car. It will cost a few hundred for the inspection plus £895 for the warranty so all in about £1k. If you make an offer closer to the asking the seller is only being bid down around a grand although taking the risk on the car needing money spending on it and OPC usually find something. Another point is that if you find a car close to its major service and haggle that into the deal it can work in everyones favour as often when the two are done togeather the inspection cost is often wavered and some repair jobs are done cheaper than usual while the car is already in bits.

The OPC warranty can be applied onto car up to their 9th birthday so once they are ten all will be out of warranty. Once under warranty it can be renewed without inspection every year as long as he car is correctly serviced.

Buying a car privately like this is great as you essentially buy a car in the same state/level of risk as you would buying off OPC's forecourt but with a substantial saving.

Yep - thanks again.

Went to look @ a 2.5 at an OPC today (checked on phone prior to leaving) but turned out sold when arrived! (Still enjoyed a look round though!)

welcome to PH!

I ran a boxster as a company car for three years and 75000 miles.

as i wasnt paying for the servicing all work was done at the opc and it never required any out of the ordinary servicing.

it did require two rear main seals. both were done under warranty, and budget for 800 quid if you dont have this cover.

the only other expense was the usual brakes/tyres

when it left me the car felt just as tidy as the moment it arrived, and i have little doubt it is now running around with an inaccurate 40000 miles on the clock....

Hey, I've got a 2.5 i've had for 6 years that i'm probably going to sell privately soon - she's done exactly 60k, which isn't much. If you're London based and interested, let me know. I can't image i'll get more than £12k for her (is that right?), so may suit your budget.
