I got the car out of the garage this morning.first thing i noticed was a lighter pedal than normal.Selecting first required a small shove.Once away everything was fine. But i have noticed that every gear selection is a bit notchy, also when selecting reverse, before you could go with any of the forward gears and then in to reverse. Now it seems you can only go from 5th to reverse to avoid a slight crunch.Am i looking at impending clutch failure?B.T.W clutch was inspected in september of last year by Austecs who declared it fine. But a lot can happen since then. Also a new slave was fitted also at the same time.Any ideas??

Is the fluid topped up? You could also try a quick bleed of the system to see if it resolves it? Hope you get it sorted.

I guess first things first check the clutch fluid. I know its a pain to get at but it is the first stop. Whats happend to you happend to me last year. since the master cylinder only holds a thimble full it soon comes to the end. I topped mine up from time to time without any clutch failure. I guess I topping it up twice during the season. Strangly I thrashed to Le Mans and back without losing a drop? Has your Cerb been laid up for the winter?
I changed the the slave cylinder when I fitted a new gearbox and it's been fine since. I'm assuming you've not noticed fluid on the drivers mat? I understand this is a dead giveaway if the Masters gone. Hope this helps.

How did you cope ?!?!?

I went to Canada for a week and as soon as I got back and got passed the jet lag, made some excuse to take it out for a spin.

It made me appreciate the roads in the UK a whole lot more too. In a word: Corners.

Fair one.

Only made it to the railway station on time this morning because I was driving the Cerbera and not my normal station car

Just an update.Ive bled the system. But it still feels the same. What i have noticed is,that when you push it in to first with a small shove the car actually moves forward a bit.

The clutch is not disengaging correctly. Sounds like finger woes to me or perhaps your seals are leaking and causing the slave cylinder to work back slowly (like when master cylinder seals on your brakes weap).

if the gearbox feels ok when the engine isn't running i would say it could be the clutch fingers.

I havent lost any fluid.Checked and it was ok.You can get the car in gear easy when the engines off.But it needs a bit of a prod when running.Slave was fitted last year along with a new thrust bearing. But this has always been noisey since fitted.

Early or late clutch? If it's early then it could well be the fingers.

Seems strange that your "noisy" thrust bearing has gone quiet roughly the same time.

Going through all the paper work.It had the later type clutch fitted in 98 at the factory. It must have been my imagination, but the noise of the thrust bearing is still there.Changing the clutch is my last resort as i know what a big job it is.I want as much feed back off of here before i attempt at doing it.Im armed with the MadMark clutch guide just in case.

Well we know its a clutch issue. Is the biting point any different? Is it right at the bottom? Does the clutch really feel lighter or is that just you thinking that as something is not right?

Things I would check;

Check is the input shaft into the master cylinder. Sometimes the lock nut can come loose and the shaft can wind itself in. You should just have a small amount of play in the pedal.

Check for fluid around the master cylinder, you say the fluid wasnt down but maybe there is a small weap letting air in.

Check for any fluid around the bell housing (Slave seals) but I soubt its these.

Other than the above it suggests the fingers or stuck pressure plate. If the above fail then its a gearbos out jobbie.

Good luck

Ive just been reading some of your posts on previous clutch issues. The pedal feels normal and hasnt changed at all.Its just got inceasingly notchy putting it in to gear.A mate of mine who is a mechanic got in the car today, and whilst pushing it in to first you could see that the car was slightly moving forward as he done so.He said it felt like it was dragging and not releasing properly.Im still driving the car B.T.W.Whats your thoughts? And are you under the impression like a few on here that its the fingers?

Seals, allmost certainly.
Maybe the master (pedal area) or slave (bell housing).
Bad news is, even if it is the pedal area (cheapish), within a month the slave( expensive) will go.
Do you have the AA cover? £50 as opposed to £500, maybe worth taking it out before the inevitable.

For some reason,i dont suspect the seals.Pedal feels normal. No fluid loss what so ever.Ive had the slave go before, but before it did you had to constantly pump the pedal to get gears. The pedal this time feels fine.Im beginning to suspect fingers or thrust bearing.

Sorry to bore you all with this, but further update.I tried starting the car in gear this morning with the clutch pedal to the floor,to see if there was any movement when i started.Done it the first time, but couldnt be to sure if it moved on its own,or if the motion of the engine moved it slightly.Tried for a second time.In gear, pedal down,Start.car jolts forward with the starter ring gear engaged. The car stalls.Go to start the car agin. This time with the car in neutral, but now i cant get any gears at all.Switch it off put car in to gear, start up and move off on the starter.Im now under the impression that the clutch has finally let go,so attempt to make the journey to my cousins M.O.T station which is two miles away using the revs of the engine to change gear, and the starter to get me going from a stop.No less than 200 yards from his place ive got all the gears back again. So then proceed to drive a further 8 miles home with no trouble at all.Still notchy though. This is really stumping me.confused

This is odd, there is only one thing you can do.

Take it apart and take a look.

I think im going to wait until it goes completely.Like ive said ive got operation of the gears.Just a slight resistance going through the gears, not smoothly as it should be.I will change it before the Brands Hatch track day at the end of May.
