Impressive for sure, but translated into ownership this is pub material - the relative performance of these two generations on shorter blats over UK roads will be even less distinguishable. Essential for the marketing men and women though.

As long as the performance gap between Porsche's flagship turbocharged 911s and the offerings from other competing marques remains in place, all is well. Unless you deliberately search out tens of kilometres of twisty undulating pot-holed blacktop covered in wet leaves, there's little that will touch a 993tt / 996tt / 997tt / GT2 point to point with mere humans at the wheel.

Wow. Over nearly 21 kilometers of track the new 997 TT is 2 whole seconds quicker than it's predecessor? And here's me without my chequebook.

What OPC would take a cheque of you anywayhehe.I reckon that even trading in a late 996tt against a new 997tt is going to cost at least 40-50k. So those 2 seconds are a definate clincher for me.

Given that the 997TT achieved 7.54 using GT3 rubber the time is pretty poor as IIRC the 996 was tested at the time using standard tyres. However, the 997 is in a different league to the 996 is 2.7 seconds faster on the twisty and only 2.6km long Hockenheim track - the rubber again?

Not to mention a CSL at 7:50 if we're including semi-street tyres.

The time for the 996TT tested in 06/2000 was 7,56 with Pirelli P Zero and standard steel brakes.

It also states that the 997TT mustered a max cornering G of 1.3 on Cup tyres.
The 996TT on standard Pirelli's also managed 1.3Gs.

Anybody know if these figures are a full lap of the Ring or just BTG?

To be fair, the ring is more a test of power than chasis. The new car will be proportionately quicker on a tighter circuit.

I'd disagree with that.
If power is the issue then how come the turbo is slower than the GT3?
Power-to-weight is of course important, but corners is what the Ring is really about - so chasis and aero.

All of these timed laps of the ring must have been driven by different drivers of different abilities on different days in different conditions. So over god knows how far a lap is, I can't really see how you can really compare like for like.

It seems very suspect to me that the 997 is only 2 seconds quicker than a 996. Surely it must be quicker than that.

Most of the times that most sensible people take notice of are the "Sport Auto" times which are all driven by Horst Von Saurma - and so one would hope for a reasonable level of consistency. Clearly track temp. etc. will vary.
