I got pulled for speeding a couple of weeks ago on my way from Anglesey to Snetterton and was issued with a fixed penalty notice and instructions to give my licence in at a police station which, I duly did. At the police station they took my licence and transcribed all the offence details from the fixed penalty notice. I sent off a cheque as instructed and have been duly awaiting the return of my 3-point endorsed licence. Then, this morning, I received a letter requesting ALL these details AGAIN! I presume that the police have lost the information which was sent by the police station with my licence. Where do I stand if I've lost the original Fixed Penalty Notice given that I certainly can't remember the precise time, exact location or penalty number on the ticket let alone the police officer's name inside leg measurement etc! Since I fulfilled all my legal obligations first time round, where do I stand? Any legal eagles out there?

Thanks

When you are given the receipt from the Police station in exchange for your driving licence, the ticket in your hand becomes your driving licence and is acceptable for production by Police offiers if it is required at a road side check etc.

When you go to the Police Station and hand in your documents, the details are written into a book called the HORT2 register. This has an index and the details of registration numbers and surnames are entered into the index as the book is completed in numerical order.
The HORT2 register has a self carbonated copy of the original document produced and will have been filled in by the duty officer, civilian or Police officer, with all the details relating to the offence and your licence number

Go to the Police Staion where you surrendered your licence. Ask the duty officer to locate the relevant HORT2 register and get the information you require from that. It should not really be your problem if you have attended the Police Station and produced the required documents.

A letter sent back explaining that you have done this and the Police Staion where it was done, should allow the enquiry to be actioned without getting you to have to do the leg work for them.

Actually, they didn't give me any receipts (they only have the counterpart anyway - I have an EEC licence with the photocard). Could I just ask them to contact the receiving police station directly? I don't see why, when I've done what I was meant to do, I should waste time i don't have on sorting out their inefficiency.

Write to them rather than phoning, and keep a copy. Explain the day and time that you attended whatever Police Station you attended with your licence and let them sort it out from there. It is not your problem. If they have lost the details of your offence, then it looks as though you may well be lucky and end up not having to suffer the consequences of a ticket.
