Can somoene tell me the proper name for it, and reccomed where the best is place to buy one? Does it matter if it's a proper Canon or something else that fits? I've seen batteries with different mAh numbers (at Jacobs), does this number make a siginificant difference to the battery's performace?

It's called a BP-511. The genuine ones are quite expensive but you can get "copies" on eBay. I've just bought some similar ones for my 350D from seller "cheekycroc" - he has some listed at the moment for 99p. At that price you can't go wrong - even if it only lasts a year, you can buy about 50 of them for the price of one genuine one.

Can't remember where I got mine - might have been picstop - just under a tenner. Absolutely no problems or difference in battery life compared with my canon oem one.

I've got 6 "equivalents" bought from 7dayshop about 2 years ago and they're still going strong.

They last a lot longer than the pair of Canon originals i have too.

I've been using 7day shop supplied compats in my 20d and 5d for a couple of years, even had them in a 300D

iirc the Canon 511 is rated at something like 1390mAh and the compats are 1500mAh

for less than a round of drinks, mad not to
