Set off on trip to the lake district and lost power during the journey. AA man after removing air intake pipes deduced that both banks of cylinders were receiving fuel, but when the engine rev's were increased, one side of the engine was fuel starved. The potentiometer plugs were cleanded but made no diference. After that he had no idea how to fix it, so left after I wouldn't let him take it! 4.5 V8 by the way..Any ideas? scratchchin

I don't know how the ECU is set up on the original engine, it could have lost a driver in the ECU itself, if they drive one bank per side this could be it. If you switch the driver to the other side and see if the problem goes to the other bank. Can you swap the plugs?

A Driver?? Do you mean a software driver? I have the software from bike281 website and a laptop (but not the laptop from Biker281's website cos that would be silly), but have never loaded the software. If you do mean this then I would love to know more about this aspect of my car. What lead do you require and where do you get it from? Where do you plug it in and what are the regular setting that we should be looking for. It would be great if someone could set up a site with full instructions and settings. If i've got the wrong thread then let just tell me as i'm utterly confused.

If your laptop has a serial port on it, then you are laughing, otherwise it can be a bit awkward. If it does have a serial port, get yourself a serial cable, and then connect your laptop to the serial connector on inside the ECU which is in the passenger side footwell. Once the software is loaded and unzipped, you will be able to see all ECU parameters, fault codes etc etc and the help file as part of the program will then direct you as to where the problem lies.

Oh yeah, make sure the serial port is talking on COM1, otherwise the software won't accept it!

Not software, HARDWARE the actual ECU itself. When looking at the loom on these it seems that the MBE uses 2 Drivers to activate the injectors ( one per bank.) If one driver went down it would lose one side of the injectors, So...if you swapped the drive from one bank to the other side and the problem switched with it to the other side, you know its that. I had this problem myself a couple of weeks ago, and did a roadside repair by using a spare driver in my Emerald ECU, wedged it in with a twig! but it got me home.

Thanks Windsor
I dig out my pc cables...might already have one of these. I was expecting a specialist plug on the car end of the cable. Are you local? I live near Bawtry, Doncaster. If you are it would be good to exchange e-mail address's.

OK, follow the logic on swapping them over. Will I find these drivers in the passanger footwell? If so what do they look like? If a driver has failed, where would I buy a new one? Would this explain it ticking over ok and then one bank leaning out when revs increase?

I cant remember the original loom, but look at the injectors and see if the loom plugs 4 on each bank, IF you can swap them ( this is in the engine bay.) then do it, and see if the problem swaps banks. If this is the case then you will havto send the ECU to have a new driver installed, wont cost that much.

I know I'm jumping the gun, but where would you send the ECU if this is the problem?

hi copilot

check the coil packs under the purple hoses. pretty sure one coil pack per bank. these are the plastic boxes which the spark plug leads go into. could be that one of these boxes is breaking down. sometimes you can see cracks etc.

fairly cheap easy fix if so.

good luck.

As the MIL light is not on, does this mean that an error code will not be registered in the ECU?

My guess would be something simple like coil pack as well. Is this a simple job to check by swapping leads between the two?
