A back protector is a good idea but if you have not yet bought a set of leathers don't rush out and buy a back protector as some leathers (like BKS) come with the armour, including a back protector, built in.

If you saw the GP today and saw Olive Jackie land on back you will never venture onto the road or track without one. eek

I have one and fortunately it hasn't come in handy so far (300 miles), but I wouldn't go out for a ride without it...

I have one in my jacket and would feel naked without it in, never tested it though.

For road riding don't wear rigid ones. They can make some injuries a lot worse.

Yes and yes! For spirited road riding and track work I wouldn't get dressed without it.

Fantastic bit of kit. Soft and pliable yet it absorbs a huge amount of energy. I had a blackbelt mate of mine kick me with full force in the back and I didn't even move. He reckoned I should have hit the deck like a sack of spuds. I can't recommend it highly enough. My Crowtrees were made to measure with me wearing it and you really can't tell it's there.

Why the difference between road and track riding?

You tend to hit the deck then slide on a track, on a road you hit the deck, slide, then hit something solid (tree, kerb, etc.).
