My other half (Staceyb) has been stopped by the traffic police for 98 on the M62 west bound after J34. Was dwead straight and no ther traffic apart froma few MLM's.
She has given some form thats says she will get a court sumons for the offence. She has a clean licence and is 23, what is likely to get? Anything she can say or do to help matters and reduce the fine & points??

Cheers

How utterly sickening that you should even be stopped at that speed, let alone dragged through the courts. I had a glorious drive down to Kent today, averaging around 110mph on the lightly trafficked motorways as people were generally very polite and observing correct lane discipline. I was passed a few times, obviously passing quite a few other vehicles, and at no point did me, my passenger or any other road user have a remotely "interesting" moment, just calm, efficient progress which enabled us to make best use of the day and minimise travel time. The way it should be! The idea of crawling along at 70 poxy miles an hour fills me with deep loathing. 98mph shouldn't even elicit a raised eyebrow, let alone wasting everybodies time going to the bloody courts.

She said is was some young lass you dealt with it and was an older guy driving the car. When she said about not giving an NIP he apparently sighed quite heavily.
Has runied a really good weekend.
We drove back to Lincoln from the south coast and didn't see one police car and saw plenty of dangerous driving. And she gets stopped for doing a poxy 98. Where were they when some tt took offence to me overtaking me and nearly ran me of the road.

I was caught on the M6 a couple of years ago for 96.20mph, upper limit for FPN is apparently 95.99mph... rolleyes

First speeding offence, clean licence beforehand.

Court appearance, pleaded guilty by letter, in my written statement which apparently must be read out in court prior to sentencing I simply made my apologies, stated I'd learned my lesson (it's true - I never realised the rearview mirror on an early Clio had such a large blindspot until then laugh), sneaked in the point that I'd never been caught speeding in the past.

£200 fine, £35 costs, 5 points.

I really have no idea whether that was good or bad, or whether I improved or worsened my case with the statement I made. Regardless, the fine was cheaper than losing 8 hours billing to my client plus travel costs to defend myself when pleading guilty anyway.

Dunno if age has anything to do with it but at the time I was 31, licence held 14 years, last points were 12 years previous. Dunno if they even form part of your previous or not after that length of time???

Stop moaning about the Police doing their job. Agree they should stop every nutter driving dangerously. However, 98mph probably registered as at least 100mph on her speedo. We all know we are taking a risk doing that speed.

She may not get a summons, but probsbly will. She may then get off with 6 points and a fine. It is possibly better for her to get the other option which is a short ban (duration depending on magistrate 'form') - this way after 14/28 days or whatever the license comes back with no points on it. (By possibility I mean perhaps you can plan a 2 week vacation just after the court case, maybe she can take the train/cycle to work??).

By the way my speed on that occasion was a steady and consistent 100mph indicated... 3.8% error.

Curses to Renault for their visibility ergonomics. Plod'd followed me for ages with blues on before this white volvo with ECILOP written on the bonnet loomed into view right on my clacker They weren't very happy...

Paddy hope it goes OK. It shouldn't be toooo bad. Certainly my insurance company couldn't care less about the points despite my car being horribly modified / performance oriented. So once the fine's out the way it's done and dusted.

Once you're over 26mph over the limit you *will* be in court summons territory - they can't deal with it using a FPN beyond that point.

Mad situation really, though. On a motorway you've then got a window of 4mph in which you're in court looking at points (a ban still possible if the speed was massively inappropriate, perhaps?) and anything beyond that you're either employing Freeman or looking at a ban.

Tiny tolerance in which to operate.

But they can go for summons far below 26mph over the limit if they wish. They don't have to wait for that point to take that action.

Fair point. I assume this would normally apply in the case of "if the speed was massively inappropriate" although not necessarily with the aim of obtaining a ban?

Thats we were thinking.

How can a ban be better? They stay with you for ever at least points come off your licence.

Apparently while following Stacey they had to go round a MLM, but thats ok as they were doing 70 so they must be safe. Not that were awake i bet.

There are many reasons it could happen. Even for as simple a reason as I haven't got a FPN available.

My sympathies, Paddy.

Ban for SP* should stay on for four years (5 years for insurance) the same as points. Ban for drink / dangerous driving is longer.

Cheers Madbadger. Think taking the points is best though, did a quick insurance check, will struggle with a ban on her licence!! The 6 points only seem to add about £60-90 to it.

Cheers

I couldn't agree more. No one killed, no one injured.
Safe progress on the safest type of road.

Is this the best use of police time & resources ?

I think not - I'd rather have tailgaters, mobile phone users
and lousy lane discipline targeted, since they are all far more
risky than merely speeding.

What a backward little country the UK is.

Cracking along at 115-125 mph the other day with no worries on a well-maintained road with light traffic - no problem at all..........

Something to think about...

96mph marks the threshold between a few points and a relatively trivial fine to a possible ban. How many of the annual "KSI" is caused primarily by driving above 96mph?

Destroy the speed limit fascists, they should be universaly despised.
