We're looking at buying a couple of new mountain bikes and need somewhere outside to store them as the current ones are stored in the garage which means getting the car out to get to them and its just not practical.

Looking around, this one seems the best bet, but a tad expensive @ £379. Anyone have any ideas on storage sheds that are better value? Preferably metal/plastic and big enough to hold 2 bikes

Looking at the pictures on your profile, and drooling over the viper shots, you don't seem to live on the same kind of Stepford Wives urban estate that I do.

Around here there is a bit of a problem with stuff being stolen. I therefore keep my bike in the living room.

That box does look to be a good solution if space allows, however I'd want to have a look at one in the metal to see whether it feels sturdy, has strong locks, and will protect your bikes from the elements.

I should be so lucky! I should point out that any storage shed would be in the back garden alongside the house, so security isn't the issue, just easy access, low maintenance and weather proof.

It does appear to be a good solution, but would still like to see one up close to see how well it seals. The basic price does not include a floor or the locks however.

Assuming that garden space is not a limiting factor, would spending a little more one of their secure garden sheds not be a better option?

You could then double the shed as a bike workshop, or use it to store other garden tools and "cr@p" that sheds usually end up with.

I think the key with garden sheds is having the disipline to keep them tidy and have a place for everything and everything in it's place. Racks and "shadow boards" on the walls are the best solution .... plus a dirty great padlock

Tip - don't for one second think that you can make a shed or one of these alu containers secure enough to put a bike in.

There is nothing you can do to a thin wooden or aluminium structure that will stop someone taking your baby...

What you have to do is fix the bikes to something that is definitely not going anywhere - the floor.

When putting your base in, you need to get someone to weld you up a nice big loop from the thickest steel rod you can find. This then gets concreted into the floor, bikes are attached to this. Shed then just happend to sit over the top to keep the rain off.

And remember, its only as secure as the weakest point. A thousand pound bike should be locked up with a hundred pound lock, not a 15 pound one. And dont leave the key hanging off a nail right next to it!
