1st post. Been lurking for far too long & realised it was time to join in the fun. Back to the topic already I hear them say. Currently have TT 300 & am travelling to France on hols soon. Have 2 options:

1. Download map for W. Europe onto my roomy SD card (1GB)- £65
2. Buy TT 710. Job change means the bluetooth would be v. useful & the wife can have the TT 300 for her motor - £250

Question is this:

1. Is the quality of both the speaker & mic good enough for motorway conversations factoring in road noise?
2. Do the directions mute throughout the phone call, reduce in volume or can be set by user?

Thoughts much appreciated.

Cheers.

Dont rely on the 710s voice calling abilities via blutooth.
I had an old 700 in my car n i could hear everything that was being said, but the person on the other end of the phone couldnt hear me even if i shouted. N i didnt have the quietest car but this happened even at about 30mph.
TomTom say that the new 710 is better as it has a fancy new microphone and speaker (which is why it cant match the small size of the Garmins), but im not convinced by this through very brief use.

As for the directions they can be set to read at a low volume or not at al during calls, and visual on-screen displays still given

Hope this helps, if in Doubt just go into Halfords and ask them to demo one for you. They should have at least one of the new TomToms they can show you

Thanks for the reply. Have always found these things good round town but useless for the other person to hear you @ mway speed. The functionality Halfords could show but not what its like mid-call on the move. Looks like the downloaded updates & a dedicated hands free soltuion the better bet. Cheers. Anyone else's thoughts?

Ive got a 910 and its not bad at low speeds.

The speaker is plenty loud enough but the mic lets it down a bit and I tend to end leaning forward and shouting at anything more than about 50. Having said that a noisy car doesnt help. Id guess in a quiet car - such as yours - it'd be fine.

910s are supplied with an external microphone - they're not a lot on eBay.

Thanks guys. Volume of the call not much of a concern TT300's volume settings certainly loud enough, more the microphone picking my speech up. Great suggestion on the external mic. Was there a significant improvement over without? Anyone else with experience of the external mic on these things? Cheers.

All the x10 series come with the external mic in the box.

Mines on the sunvisor and I still have to lean forward to within a few inches of it to be heard... tis quite a noisy car though liek I said.

I use my 710 in a Volvo 740 2.5T & drive a lot on motorways - been no problem with the external mic.

I use a 510 which seems to be the same as the 710 bar the maps. The handsfree calling is absolutely rubbish on mine. Even using the external mike and talking right into it (6 inches away) people struggle to hear me above 30mph.
